Exactly. People will say how important what social class you are in is, but they can't even define these classes or what puts you in certain social classes.

Is a guy making $100k a year but hangs out with powerful or influential people in a higher social class than the guy across town who makes $1m and hangs out with his family and neighbors? And who is better off?

If you can't define it or control it, then what's the point, aside to make those who claim they are "high social class" feel special?

Good one. Al Copeland and Ronnie Lamarque would never be in Comus. Same deal.

The op clearly meant economic status, but for whatever reason, people started talking about the vague and useless "social class" distinction, as if that has any relevance in today's world.

It appears he left up to the replies as he didn't really state either

You are delusional if you believe that social class is irrelevant in our society.

Yea, but neither of those groups want to mingle usually, so it shouldn't matter to either of them.

Where would Jay Z fall? Not classical "high class" but certainly uninhibited by his profession, background, and trashy lyrics.

I'm lower middle. The census Bureau did say that 100k and above is upper class. I'm sure it's been covered in the 17pages of this thread.

What does someone with $10mm in assets and $500k annually who us considered "lower social class" miss out on that they want to do?

It's just different. The very few truly upper class individuals I've ever known (if you can even call it there in this area) live a much different lifestyle than me.. even if I would consider them my friends.

Social clubs, politics, knowing people by name everywhere they go, not being afraid to introduce themselves by name to influential people they might not know personally, having the community care about what they're doing even if they're not doing anything important (rich because of family only), etc.

No, I am not. It's importance is measured by how easily identifiable it is. If it really mattered we all wouldn't be saying "if I had to guess, I'm in x class." If it's so important, why can't anyone define it?

What has your "approximate" social class hindered? How do I know where I sit, so I can prepare myself for all the things I will miss out on due to my class?

He has more doors opened by his status then closed. Really just some clubs that only care about family. But they are closed to anyone, no matter the wealth.

Exactly.

While a 27 year old working for the state making $50k would be accepted if she came from true old money/influential parents.

The Krewe of Zeus Founded in 1958, the Krewe of Zeus presented the first night time parade ever held in a suburb of New Orleans. Zeus is known to be the Krewe that began the grand Metairie Parade tradition.

The Krewe of Zeus is the oldest parading organization in Metairie, having been founded in 1957 The beginnings of this all male club is interesting, to say the least. A group of six businessmen, while partying at Gennaro’s bar on Metairie Road, decided that it was time for Metairie to have its own carnival parade.
