What do you call this hat?

I've been calling it a sock hat for years, because that's what my dad always calls it.
But apparently it called a beanie or knit cap.

Funny…I dealt with this just yesterday. Someone in my subdivision was asking on the neighborhood website where he could find one. It caused quite a bit of confusion when he called it a beanie. I have always called that a sock hat.

When did it become mainstream to call those beanies? I always used 'beanie' for this:
