If I was coaching a child to end up like Ryan in Never Back Down

He would take Western Boxing & Wrestling while young and then as he matured would make the switch to Muay Thai & BJJ

Krav Maga and BJJ are two of the more practical ones in real world situations.

I always felt a kid learning straight up boxing was the best for an untrained HS bully, but the more I read, the more I think BJJ. Which is why I think learning BJJ and boxing secondary may be good.

I completely agree on BJJ being the most effective for only 1 on 1. But nobody fights fair these days and you have to watch the frick out if you chose to pull someone down to the ground

I think boxing will give the fastest results mainly because he'll be going full speed against someone early on in the training. The way to get over the fear of getting punched in the face is to get punched in the face. Modern MMA wasn't really around when I was a kid so maybe it's just as good, I wouldn't know.

Maybe some karate/kung fu places are serious about teaching kids to fight but most of them are just collecting money from soccer moms who would raise three kinds of hell if her kid came home with a bruise. If the kid's not coming home with bruises he's not learning how to fight.

Boxing or kickboxing or Muay Thai or BJJ

Boxing probably yield quickest and most applicable results.

Jits by far. It's easy and tempting to think you can learn to box or kickbox and be some kind of billy bad arse, but the reality is that it takes forever to get proficient in those type of arts. Not that jiu jitsu doesn't, but if you're a advanced blue belt, you can handle the vast majority of people that are untrained.

It's not about the art....its about the school.

Find a school that does live sparring. If they don't ever do live sparring keep looking.

I'm convinced someone floated this martial art as a joke just to see how far it would carry in the public.

It looks good in demos and for movies.

I've never heard of a Krav Maga school doing any live sparring.

You can't learn to fight if you never actually fight.

Isn't one of the pillars of Krav Maga to try to bash your opponents skull in? Kinda hard to practice that I'd imagine

That's pretty much every art...but they figure out how to spar live.

It's kinda like...what would be your chance of hitting a highschool pitchers curve ball when you have only hit off a tee.

Without live sparring you aren't preparing yourself.

You can't learn to fight with dead sparring...it has to be live.

Yeah but it's practical to practice a jab or a double leg. It's not practical to practice bashing skulls.

I don't know shite about Krav Maga but I'm sure they have a way of realistically simulating the techniques they teach.

Most of what I've seen is dead sparring.
