The simpler machines break less. Those cheap top freezer models soldier on forever.
The removal of the defrost timer was the death knell for reliable home refrigeration. For decades, fridges ran on a timer. This timer ran 8-12 hours and then shut off for 15-25 minutes. At this point a heater came on and melted built up frost. Once a set temperature was reached the unit cut off power and waited for the timer to kick the compressor back on. Simple. You can get timers for $10.
They are almost universal. Fridges that used this tech, could have their controls changed out for less than $100 by a technician. It was a cheap quick fix.
Well this was a waste of energy and hurt manufacturers when Energy Star came out. They all started switching to Adaptive Defrost Boards. These monitor different aspects of the fridge, from ambient temp to door opening time and frequency. They replace the timer completely and range from $80-$250 for normal ones, and can get much higher, I think $750 for a KitchenAid built in is currently the highest. (never changed one) They took a simple system and complicated it. All to save $30-50 a year in electricity. To get that high Energy Star rating and meet mandates.
I can say I like Maytag, and someone will say Maytag sucks. I think you won't go wrong with the whirlpool brands, Frigidaire or even a Samsung. If icemaker is a concern yes get the one in the freezer. The fridge ones, never seem to live up to expectations. The icemaker actually has it's own freezer in the fridge, so temp shouldn't be an issue.
A lot of people love dual evaporator units. With those you get more control over you temps. More costly though. More parts.
find one that you like with reviews you are comfortable with.

We are replacing all of our appliances with Whirlpool. Kitchen stuff is mid level. Washer/Dryer is pretty basic.

Kenmore - we've had ours for 20 years lived in 4 states and it was outside for 4 years. Still running like a champ. Only issue was the freezer drain plugged up twice causing ice all over the bottom of freezer. Fixed by running copper wire from heater coil into drain hole. Fixed.
Samsung- French door style. Solid, but we sold it with the house after 4 years. Only issue was ice maker overflowed all the time after year 3. Had to replace the icemaker. Methinks the wife kept hitting the reset button on it and it burned it out. That was 7 years ago, so maybe Samsung fixed that issue.

Thanks for the advice. I'll look at maytag and samsung aswell. Was leaning samsung initially but heard bad reviews on that too. A little harder than just goin pick out a fridge nowadays

That little bar lever freezes up too and I gotta go in there with a knife to clean it up.

I'm having trouble finding a manual. I thought on those models the ice hit an arm on the icemaker to stop ice. May be mistaken. I just didn't see IR lights on the parts breakdown. There is a light that goes on the bottom of the icemaker that could be it.
As far as adjustments, I am still trying to find that out. I can't find the manual in my normal spots.
I think the lights could be LED and the bar is the ice level cut off. Most units with the IR don't have the lever.

Yea I dont really know what the arm does because it is at the top by the ice tray and NEVER lowers itself or really moves.
Ive spent nites looking every 30 mins to see if it has moved.
Not
But the are 3 lite sensors in the middle, back, top pointing down into the ice.

We bought this Samsung model: RF28HMEDBSR. It's a big one with the middle drawer that we have found using more than any part of the fridge, besides the ice maker. It was a Consumer Reports(yeah I know but it is still data) Best Buy and we got it for under 2k. GF has been looking at the type and we finally just threw caution to the wind and got it. As an aside, we have a 30 year old Frigidaire upright freezer that survived the flood and is still running like a champ. It's so old that it has R11 refrigerant.
