Atlanta haters just don't like big cities. If you want high pay, tons of career options without moving the family, etc, you are likely to find yourself in a large city at some point. Of those, you have NYC, LA, and Chicago in their own super-city category. Then:
6-7 million range:
Dallas
Houston
DC
Philly
Miami
Atlanta
4-5 million range:
Boston
San Francisco
Phoenix
Detroit
Seattle
Below that you start getting into your mid size cities where the number of Fortune 500 companies HQ'd there start to drop off fast.
So of those dozen or so cities above, if you had to pick one, Atlanta isn't so bad.

Except so much of this board views any place that is > 25,000 residents in population as a shithole.

I live in Smyrna and love it. Rarely go downtown. I live on the silver comet and go to the battery. It’s actually a great place to be.
Get to blue ridge in a couple hours, auburn in an hour and forty five mins. Panama City in 5.
Your circumstances may vary but I am happy

I don't understand how anyone who lives in Louisana, Mississippi, Alabama, or Tennessee could actually think that Atlanta is an unpleasent place to live.
Maybe they don't want to live in massive urban sprawl. Maybe they want to live on the Gulf Coast or in the Smoky Mountains. Besides that, Atlanta just sucks

Once a southern jewel and destination. Now it’s on par with Philadelphia and the rest.
