I have some affluence and could afford to buy pretty much what I want regarding clothes but am an AVID thrifter. I just enjoy the hunt. You’d be surprised at the nice stuff I’ve gotten at Goodwill. Recently found two Valentino and one Hickey Freeman silk-cashmere blazer for $5. (Valentino’s were $12 each) for my college son plus a pair of barely worn Allen Edmond dress shoes.
My rule as to new is anything that has touched arse/crotch.
Ironically my more well to do friends are the biggest thrifters, my poorer friends think it’s disgusting.
(Side bar regarding hats: LSU kid hooked a vintage baseball hat from the swamp recently. It had moss and barnacles growing on it but he wanted to save it because it was some old bait shop hat. Took lots of Oxy Clean and Lysol disinfectant but we got it into pretty good shape. I told him he probably pulled it off of a skeleton at the bottom and it made him like it even more ).

In Houston.. There is a sweet spot where Chinese upper middle class donors (luxury brand obsessed) meets Hispanic Bario shopper (totally unconcerned with luxury brands). It’s like finding those warm still waters in an alcove no fisherman has touched.
