Direct your donations through a church that will then give the donation to a specific family in need. It works well for the flood victims and makes your donation tax deductible. What is this 50% business with St.Judes?

Charity Nav recommends Southern Poverty Law Center. They lost all credibility with hat one.

Compassion International is a good one. Really awesome experience getting to meet a child that you sponsor.

I know a family from BR whose child was treated for Leukemia at St Jude's. They went through hell and back but did not pay a dime for medical care and stayed at Ronald McDonald house while going through multiple treatments and surgeries. Their daughter came through and is cancer free for 4 years. St Jude's is a special place. My research shows $0.74 of every dollar goes to research and treatment, while the rest goes to fundraising, 15% and admin at 19%. I am good with that.

I do a few.

Mostly to cults. 501c3's

Sometimes to specific natural disaster relief. Earthquake, fire.

Often give items for resale to local churches.

Often to panhandlers.

Often to local high school. Party for graduation. Band trips.
