Not many people had them back then either IIRC. My parents first got them around 1998 or 1999. My brother got one too around then because he had his license.

Before, we’d just use pay phones or a friends land line
The payphone was pretty much already gone when I was a kid. I remember seeing a few around, but not anywhere I would be that I needed them. Plus I never had change to use them. They were pretty much only in low income areas from what I remember, but I grew up in a small town.

I had a bag phone in high school. It was like $2 a minute with no plan minutes

I don’t understand why no one in this thread is suggesting getting their kids a basic phone that just does calls, not an iPhone with data

True, but I'm retired and there are what?? 12 areas of interest to post to on this site, so that works out to roughly 10 posts a day, many of them 2-3 sentences long, if that.

Yup or unless I can find super cheap really old iphones.
I've seen these watch/phone things for younger kids. Looks like a watch but is a phone. Very basic though. You program it with maybe 4 phone numbers in it. Think it even has GPS in it in case child gets lost. Something like that isn't a bad idea as well.

They were almost everywhere I went as a kid. Skating rinks, movie theatres, malls, etc etc.
I’m fairly certain we’re the same age.

I don't know maybe I just don't remember them. I always used an adults cell phone as a kid when I needed to call my parents.

You must have missed my post about just getting them a flip phone.
They still make them...my dad has one cause smartphones seem too complicated to him. His phone was like $70 brand new. If you get one of trac phone flips(my little brother and mom has one of those)...the phone is maybe $40.

I remember we could make a call on a pay phone with no money by entering my parents home number and a pin. The cost would be on their monthly bill

Did you read the thread?

My 3-1/2 year old has her own PixelXL phone. Its setup like a tablet where it only works on wifi.
She uses it like her tablet but works better at bedtime since it's smaller and eaiser to handle and emits less light making it easier for her to fall asleep.
When I'm at work and she misses me, and wants to see da-da, she will call me through the "Hangouts" app located on the home screen.
