I had my own group of friends that couldn't be easily defined by concrete characteristics. I was on the Wrestling team, but I didn't really hang out with the team outside of athletics. In fact, it wasn't uncommon for me to go to the rodeo on a Friday night with my Rodeo team friends, then hang out with Band nerds on a Saturday.

Nevermind. I overlooked the whole grade school thing. As I recall, "popularity" didn't really become a thing until middle school.

I wore my hair in a ponytail far too often to sit with the plastics.

I was what you called a wallflower. I didn't pile around with any particular clique and had friends/acquaintances in multiple ones.

The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads - they all adored me. They thought I was a righteous dude.
