Retired NRL prop Ben Ross has been rushed to hospital after breaking his arm live to air on The Footy Show on Channel 9.

The former Dragons, Cronulla, Penrith and South Sydney forward was participating in an arm wrestling contest with another former Queensland State of Origin representative, Wendell Sailor.

Ross and Sailor were participating in an Iron Arm Challenge to raise money for the Men of League charity.

The program quickly went to an advertisement break after the incident and hosts Paul Vautin and Erin Molan told viewers after the break that Ross had been taken to hospital for treatment.

The Footy Show stated on its Facebook page that "Ben's on his way to hospital and is in good spirits"

The studio audience fell silent in horror after the incident.

Later in the show Vautin tried to lighten the mood by saying Ross "reckons he was on top of Wendell at the time".
