Wellington boots...what’s the deal?

I figured this was the day to ask since it’s boot day apparently on the OT.
Wellington’s are the typical rain boots in Britain. Worn by the Royal Family and all. They aren’t a girl thing, but it seems to be the case in America. It seems only girls wear them over here, brands like Hunter. So what’s the deal? Are they only for overseas Anglo figs? Why do you think they aren’t a thing over here? I can’t recall ever seeing a guy wear them
