When I was a kid about 8 or 9, I had an incident happen to me that changed how I looked at people. A friend and I were riding our bikes back from a Pak-a-Sak when we encountered a group of black kids. My friend rode on, leaving me to face the music. They demanded my candy and I probably would have given it to them, but they called me 'the N-word'. I was honestly shocked and befuddled and told them, "I'm white, only black people can be N-word". And I rode off with my candy.

When I was a kid during the Vietnam war, I was also a big fan of going to basketball games and tournaments. During a news report about the war, I asked my Mom, "If we win this one, who do we fight next?"

My dad was on the school board. Whenever he had a meeting, I always thought that he was playing on the wooden see-saws on the school playground.

Not as kid but only a few years ago when someone mentioned a flash mob, I thought it was a mob of people in trench coats flashing people in unison or in a routine.

I interepreted "Brought to you" in terms of a sponsor for something to be "bratue" when I asked people to sponsor me in a swim-a-thon.

I grew up outside of Birmingham and there is a city here called Roebuck.

My uncle worked at Sears when I was a kid and I always thought he worked at the Sears (in) Roebuck. Had no idea that there were other Sears anywhere in the world until I was about ten years old.

Talking behind someone's back. I would always look for the person and then look behind them.

I just couldn't grasp the concept.

I seriously believed that if I told a single lie I would go to hell. I never lied about anything and would always get myself in trouble.

THEN, I realized if it were true, we are ALL going to hell. Everybody fibs here and there at times, even if it's just to keep the peace.

I didn't know women could break wind for a long time.

They can and do.

Thought it was " the land of the free, and the home of the Braves".

Braves games were where I grew up hearing it sung the most

I used to think that the searchlights on the side of some car dealerships were serving to warn the public that prisoners had escaped. Needless to say, I locked my door whenever I would see those lights in the sky.

Not a perfect match for your title, but I thought blinkers automatically switched lanes for you until I drove for the first time. I never really focused on it, but it didn't seem like anyone turned the wheel when they changed lanes.

When I was about five or six, my mom and sister were talking about some actor giving the middle finger to a photographer. Before I knew it, I was waving mine around in the air, giving an accidental 'frick you' to the whole crowd at Fudruckers

My cousin was riding with my Uncle one night when he drifted over the lane line and hit the reflectors. It scared the shite out of her. He told her to calm down, "I'm just recharging the battery."

Fast forward 8 year, my cousin (now 18) and I are driving along one night and she swerves over to run over the reflectors. Yep, she was making sure her battery was charged.

This is the girl who graduated with 4.0 from UA with a and has a masters in child psychology.
