Most of the wedding gifts are going to be divided up in the divorce a few years later

I don’t disagree with you on your thoughts. My comment is re registries in general. I like them for both weddings and 1st babies. Dont think I’ve ever been directed to one for a 2nd wedding.

My favorite are the middle aged people getting married for the 2nd or 3rd time still having a blow out wedding and asking for gifts.

Give them cash, it's what they want

They are likely going to return 50% of the gifts for cash

Give $100/ invitee

In all fairness, its hard to coordinate a 60 piece set of china for 12 people if there isn't some minimum coordination.

Even in the 90's I felt sheepish about wedding registries. I mean, I had a career and didn't have dinner parties for 12. I could afford my own toaster, I didn't really want my parents' neighbor on a pension to have to buy one for me.

Dude. I supplied the band and the open bar. The least you could do is help out with my Big Green Egg attachments. Bruh SMDH.

What’s the fun in that? Isn’t a gift supposed to be a surprise? I wouldn’t have any fun opening presents if I always knew what was under the wrapping.

Naw... I think the gifts are to help the couple get started in life a little bit. That's why most of the gifts are things for their home they need or want.

I think a wedding registry is fine. I hate the idea of spending money on a gift that may not be used or wanted. I see that all the time. Buying people things they end up throwing in a closet or drawer to never be seen again. Waste of time and money yeah?

I'd much rather you tell me some things you want, and I go buy one of them.

Same with baby showers. Usually stuff you need to help out... We got tons of diapers and a gift card tree full of gift cards to spend on diapers with a few outfits and toys... We had a closet full of diapers ready to go. Amazing how fast all those packs of diapers go..

It's still a surprise. The woman picks out everything on the registry anyway. Who knows what's going to show up.

You need to pay more attention to what's on the registries. Fully half of the average first time wedding registry was suggested by friends of the bride, or the future ex wife was on a shopping high in Crate and Barrel with the registry gun.

And end up with a bunch of useless stuff you didn’t ask for?

Yea, real fun.

Registries are also helpful to help prevent the couple from getting 10 of the same skillet or other common gift.

They have these websites with a list of gifts that they want.

What if I told you before the internet, you could register at a store and all of that info was there for people when they went to shop for you.

We only put nice things on our registry that we wanted to upgrade from our college kitchenware and a cash fund. Parents got us a Caphalon pan set. Since we had a ton of things and a home already, it made more sense to add the cash fund. We paid for our entire wedding and honeymoon ourselves (along with whatever financial gifts we received) because anything else would have been extra.

Any wedding I go to now, I ask my friends which they would prefer to get and almost all of them exclusively say "cash" because that's what they need. And that's fine. I got annoyed with my wife's family for trying to make us add more gifts to the registry because they refused to give cash since they thought it wasn't something you should do for a wedding.

There's people like you and there's the rest of us who don't want to have to figure out what to buy someone as a gift. If you don't tell me what you want then you get cash.
