The way it often worked was a bully said something insulting, perhaps about your wife or another female member of your family. You were honor bound to challenge him to a duel or else be considered a coward, in which case you would become an outcast. As the one challenged, he got to pick terms most favorable to him, resulting in your probable death.

It also would often set off a wave of reprisal duels, not unlike modern street beefs. This one in Natchitoches Parish resulted in 11 subsequent killings LINK

Couldn't you hire someone to fight on your behalf?

Id settle for a dance battle or maybe the guys can battle it out on hopped up lawnmowers or battlebot with drones.

The womenz can compete in the sammich making contest.

Or at least thats what the dudes in our HOA ( Heinous Old Anuses) have come up with to settle disputes.

Hell yeah. Jackson killed a rival in a duel. His VP, Burr, killed a prior Treasury Secretary ina duel.
D.C. would be an awesome place if the pro 2A conservatives could wreck shoppe over the sissy socialists.

We should bring back dueling

Given the number of gunshots in Baton Rouge and New Orleans on a weekly basis it seems pistol dueling is quite en vogue at the moment.

It goes back to England and carried over to the colonies. And it wasn't just country folk who did it. After independence, U.S. politicians actually dueled (Hamilton/Burr probably being the most famous, but there were several others).

For instance, there was the Decatur/Barron duel. Barron was a Navy Commodore and considered a coward due to his actions in the Barbary War (America's first foreign war). Decatur, on the other hand, was a hero of the war. Barron was court martialed for cowardice because of his refusal to engage a British ship. Decatur sat on his court martial trial which pissed off Barron. Years later Barron challenged Decatur to a duel. Both men did the 10 paces thing, turned around and fired. Both hit their target, but Decatur was killed while Barron survived.

Are modern American women worth dying in a duel over?
