A ride malfunction at the Delta Fair sent eight people to the hospital Saturday afternoon, though no one was injured seriously. Six children and two adults, including the ride operator, were transported as a precaution after the Moonraker shut down and the operator released the safety restraint before the ride came to a halt, according to Earle Farrell, public information officer for the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

quote:

The ride is what's called a gravity ride in which passengers are taken up to a 90-degree, or close to 90-degree, angle to the ground. Centrifugal force holds riders in place as the ride spins, but there's also a safety bar designed to hold riders in place. "The ride's onboard computer said something wasn't right, so it began slowly descending as it's designed to do," Farrell said. "Before it got all the way down, the operator apparently panicked and released the safety bar too soon." The early release caused riders to be jostled about and resulted in some panic, Farrell said.

How qualified do you really think a ride operator has to be at a carnival. My guess is the prerequisite is to be obese, a smoker, tattoo's, and a pulse.

Reminds me of that Starship 2000 or Gravitron ride. We used to flip upside down on those sliding boards while the gravity would hold you up

The Great Gravitron Massacre by Two Cow Garage

quote:

na na na na na… all the mothers began to scream and the air smelled of gasoline when the blood hit the street sons and daughters at our feet but nothing we could do and the crowd, it gathered ’round amid the bodies on the ground and i can still hear the sound of that machine coming down and those slow, sad screams na na na na na… and when the morning papers came thirteen dead and who’s to blame for all this tragedy and pain? and this little town was never the same na na na na na…

I wonder if the spinning had slowed down before the ride had leveled off. That'd result in some scary-arse "jostling"!

I used to love the gravitron. Would go upside down and sit up indian style and move like spiderman. Tried going on one last year at a fair. After twenty seconds I was waiting for it to end. fair rides aren't made for people in their mid 30's

Every school fair has these carnival rides. They seem like death traps.

?

I have never heard of one malfunctioning before, or why it would be discernibly different from any other type of fair ride.

No one was seriously hurt here.

The one good thing is that because they cross state lines, they're regulated by the federal government (Consumer Product Safety Commission). The bad thing is that they're not actually inspected by anyone.
