Waze app question

Several have mentioned it on here and I've got it downloaded ... what I want to know is (and can't find an answer to) if how far in advance are you alerted to a traffic issue? I've tried it just to play around with it and I always get kicked back to the beginning of the route.
Going on vacation in July and I'm trying to be able to fully use this (or am open to other apps).

I'm not positive about what you mean by this but are you saying your position is always at the beginning of the route? If so, sounds like you don't have gps turned on.

It updates your projected route with real time data from other users
It's constantly "refreshing" to make sure it still has you on the most efficient route.
You will hear it chirp when it makes a change.

Little unsure of what you mean. But the way I understand it when you put in your destination it gives you the fastest rate based on the current traffic conditions.

Does it work well for cops/radar?
Posted on 6/21/15 at 2:17 pm to tiger91
If there is a faster route to your destination due to traffic it automatically updates as soon as it becomes quicker

It is constantly checking and updating the quickest/shortest route based on current conditions. When you 1st input destination, it will give you the choice to select the route of your liking, displaying mileage and duration information.
If an incident occurs, it will automatically re-route for you. You'll know because it will "chirp" at you letting you know of a delay with a re-route.

It relies on other users to report cops. Decent for major highways, high traffic areas, and interstate. Pretty much useless anywhere else.

Depends on the route. If your on a busy interstate like I-10 then it works great. But on empty state Highway or something like I-49 then it doesn't work near as well.

I just drove from Florida to DC and back in the last week and used it for the first time. I found it very handy and was aware of traffic, cops, break downs, cars pulled over, etc. it notified me .5 miles ahead of anything. I had my phone synced to car so it would indicate over my car speakers what was ahead.
You either validate the presence or absence of whatever you were warned about and that way it keeps the notifications current for others.
The only thing I could not figure out is on navigation, if i choose to use a route other than the fastest, how could I switch my route to that. It would request I turn around and reroute to the most optimal route according to their maps. Ex: I choose a more scenic route over the fastest route and it wanted to reroute me to the fastest.
Otherwise, great app.

Google maps does this and also reports traffic incidents reported on waze. Is thee something special waze does that I don't already have?

I live in Houston and my car is my office. I drive to Dallas and NOLA a lot, so I guess it's worth it? Is it always active? Will it always alert me when driving or do I have to engage it every drive?

You need to enter your destination. Not nessisarily the address, but at least enter the city destination

Usually notifies you of police 1/2 mile before

I close the app when not in use, because I don't know how much of a hog it is on my data plan. Perhaps someone on here who uses their Waze app on a more continuous basis can comment on that. And by closing the app, I mean hit the home button twice, scroll left or right to find the app, then swipe upward to get rid of it.
So for me, I turn it on only when I have a destination out of town, and that's about once every 2-3 weeks.

Yes. Most of my alerts come at .5 mile out.

You can also tap the button on the bottom right of your screen that looks like a balloon (or upside down raindrop) and that brings up a screen with user-submitted reports on cops, weather, traffic, etc.
Click the button you want and read what other wazers are saying is going on ahead of you.
