I meant to tell you. When you polish the case with the Cape Cod use painter's tape on the crystal. I am 99% sure that is a plexi crystal so you could get a tube of Polywatch (also available at Amazon) and polish the majority of the scratches out of the crystal. If you want to go the super cheap way use toothpaste instead. Depending on the brand you use it is usually slower but makes the watch smell minty fresh.

But the real question is does it run and at what accuracy? How many seconds does it gain/lose in a day? If you want to keep it and wear it you will want to get it service because if I am right about the Watchmakers mark and it hasn't been serviced since '82 the jewels are drying the Marilyn Monroe's cooch. If the bearing surfaces are dry running it will produce highly accelerated wear.

Try it over 24 hours using the atomic clock or your phone is likely close enough. I would be curious how accurate it is over 24hrs.

Meant to tell you, I'm pretty sure Ace Hardware has cape cod cloths in stock if you don't want to wait on shipping. At least my local one usually does.

Nice watch. Shits addictive-I straightened the hairspring on my seiko last night and got it running again.

Nice recommendation!!!

Just did the toothpaste thing.

It’s hard to believe this watch looked like this yesterday

To this now, with just a little elbow grease. I get my cape cod cloth tomorrow

If you lost an appreciable amount of time in five minutes, that would be bad bad. Modern watches are generally expected to gain or lose no more than seven or so seconds a day. I’ll defer to Obtuse, but I would say on a watch like that, anything more than 15 to 20 seconds a day would be more than I would like. But as you can probably tell with a bit of quick math, even that is less than a second per hour.

If you want to reach watch lover levels of neurotic about it, you’ll take notes over several days comprising measurements of it lying on its case back, lying on its side, and being worn.

And then buy a demagnetizer and do it all over again

You're fine call me back when you own a Timegrapher and test and record your watches' deviation per day, amplitude, and beat error in multiple positions once every couple of months like a health report card. I have a hard time when I take a watch off not turning it on and listening to the amplified tick of the watch and hopefully see a near flat line appear across the screen with a bunch of "good" numbers at the top.

I have many neuroses as a watch collector but fortunately, keeping good time is not one of them!

Condition, however, is. This will be a perfectly serviceable watch and it is nice to see it with a new lease on life. But that case is rough.

I have it to the point of a sickness, and particularly can't stand one that is slow. I can take one or two seconds a day, and expect that from what I own. I'm like Obtuse - my time grapher definitely doesn't go unused.

A watch that runs slow annoys me as well. Super easy to just pull the crown for a few seconds to “fix” a watch running fast. But having to fully reset it? That’s just irksome

With a modern watch, I like precision. Although I don’t think I’ve had a single watch that ran fast.

But with any vintage watch, I’m fine with pretty large swings. Never know what can happen with a service (broken lume, scratches, etc.), so I try to avoid to all extents possible. Even with a manufacturer service, I’ve had things return with a polish when I very explicitly said no polish.

I hit it for a while with the cape cod cloth. I did help a lot, but it will need polishing at a watch repair store.

It did shine it up a ton.

I’m running a time test, and looks like after 8 hours, it has gained about 1 second (I’m still running it though). I started the test with all hands at 12 o’clock position.
