Was Stalingrad necessary for Hitler to grab when he did?

It seems as if it was an act of over-confidence and arrogance. Could he have focused his forces elsewhere in the east and conserved forces and supplies, and come back to Stalingrad?

He should have bypassed it and taken the oil fields instead. Hitler wanted to take Stalingrad to embarrass Stalin.

No but the result would’ve been no different in any other major city.

No. I’m fact, even had he took Stalingrad it would not have helped. He didn’t need Stalingrad.

Absolutely not.

He should have massed on the Caucasus oilfields and secured that strategic objective prior to getting into a d*ck measuring contest with Uncle Joe.

No, His ego got in the way. If he had stuck to his original plan he would have taken it later on with ease.

Haven't seen this, but the WW II stuff they show on AHC is pretty awesome too.

Look at it from a military perspective. What value does a population center contain?

Oil fields - value

Factories - value

Farmland / food production - value

Urban city full of civilians - no value (unless you need slave labor). On the contrary, capturing a bunch of civilians means you now have to assign personnel to occupy the area and watch/guard them.

It's a netflix ww2 documentary. It's pretty good.

The episode for instance on how we won the battle of midway is pretty unsettling. It was dumb luck really.

I don't understand the perceptions that Stalingrad was not strategic. A quick look at a map or going to the city today proves how strategic it is. Once you cut the Volga the rest of European Russia is cut off from the south and the oil. Stalingrad made the most sense to do that.

The problem is the Germans tried to take Stalingrad and the Caucuses at the same time.

They should have picked one, and based on the concentration of Soviet forces nearer Stalingrad, that should have been the choice.

The Russians saw their opportunity by concentrating their attack on the Romanians who lacked just about anything, anti-tank weapons, artillery, coordinated air support, trucks and above all will.

Had decent German units been protecting the flanks, Stalingrad doesn't happen the way it does.

One of his biggest mistakes was murdering Ukrainians, who greeted the Germans as liberators from Stalin and the Soviets.

Eh. It’s a rehash of wwii in color and uses much of the same film. Still amazing though.
