I just thought it was pretty cool to have the responsibility fall on the students. Programs like this are pretty great for kids with no desire to go to college.

that's pretty awesome. And I also think that these kinds of programs should be more prevalent.

I like some of these programs that have come around in the last few years. When I went to Walker all they had was shop class and home economics. Now high schools have culinary programs and welding schools... practical stuff for kids that don't need/want to go to college. I'm glad some schools are finally setting kids up for a career without having to get some useless degree.

Home ec and shop class need to be brought back.

Walker has a Papa John's staffed by students, who get credit.

That school is becoming something special

No. They are going way beyond that outdated method. Walker has agricultural science classes, business and marketing, and they even have classes on drones. They're setting kids up to enter the job force and showing them that there are opportunities outside of traditional college.

Definitely. One of the local schools he has a culinary program. I was at an event where they handled everything and came away very impressed. I later learned that the "head chef" of the culinary class was a borderline dropout that found his passion when he joined the culinary arts program. He started concentrating more in school and He was going to UCF to their hospitality degree program.

Other schools should copy what Walker is doing. College is a waste of time and money for most people

Almost every morning I see a kid walking toward Holden High School wearing jeans tucked into work boots, welding shirt, and his mask strapped to his belt. He'll probably leave high school, maybe do a little bit of classes at a tech school, and start out making good money by the time he's 19 or 20 years old.

People like to make fun of LP but I think schools out here are doing damn good work. They also just opened up that welding school in Walker on 190.

St. Amant I believe offer classes like these, along with computer coding courses. My nephew is entering high school next year, and I was impressed on what they now offer.

I think they started it this year, but when you graduate you get one of two diplomas. One for academics and the other is for the people who will learn a trade.

I have 2 degrees from LSU but I learned everything that I know about what I do for a living on the job. The traditional 4 year model is broken and too expensive. About 75% of the degrees aren't really worth anything anymore.

I agree. When I was in high school, we had a school like this. Students that took classes there, spent half their time there, and the rest at their high school. They had classes on construction (they built habitat houses), auto mechanics, body work, air conditioning work, cosmetology, typesetting, welding. Can't remember what else they had, but it was a very good program that should certainly be implemented on a more wide-spread basis. Not everyone should go to college. There are plenty of other good careers that some are more well-suited for.
