Mario Kart and Smash Brothers will give you the red arse like no other

I think this whole argument is pretty silly.
Personally, I really love to play video games. I play a pretty decent amount. I still work 40-50 hours a week, play outside, love to be by the pool, I exercise, and never has playing video games made me do something I regret.
To say it's an epidemic keeping kids out of the work force seems to me to be people trying to find a simple solution to a dynamic problem.

What kind of bullshite game let's you shoot a fricking missile at someone who out-races you?
Yeaaa frick that. I still like video games but don't play much anymore.
But here's some games I have spent 12+ straight hours playing at some time in my life from 12 yrs old to about 23 yrs old:
1. Metroid - nes
2. Phantasy Star - sms
3. Desert Strike - genesis
4. Phantasy Star 2 - genesis
5. Zelda 2 - Snes
6. Final Fantasy 7 - psx
7. Syphon filter - psx
8. Resident Evil - psx
9. Metal Gear Solid - psx
10. God of War - ps2
11. GTA Vice City - ps2
Then I had babies and shite.
But I still see video game commercials and get that teen/college age giddy feeling of nostalgia and could see myself playing 18 hours straight.

That's because they have been taught from birth competition and winning is bad and that everyone is equal in abilities and results to everyone. How can you take pride if nohing you do is exceptional?

with the rise in the E-Leagues and the money involved, people are probably looking to it as a career path (although a very tight one)
One of the games I played, League of Legends, has tournments every year with payouts being 5 million + to a 5 man team.
so do the math on that.... Plus, a lot of the gamers are streaming live and gettnig paid for it. It's nothing to be watching a top channel on twitch and see a $500.00 "donation" come through, it's crazy the amount of money in this stuff guys

Brave New World analogy is absolutely relevant, and what I think a lot of people are neglecting is that while the trend is somewhat small right now, Improvements in tech could have devastating effects. Once VR really gets going with huge companies developing titles, I could absolutely see a much larger segment pulling back like we are seeing now.
Combine it with a higher unemployment rate from automation, less social mobility what have you, I could see us heading for a 2 class divide where the best get to enjoy the real world while the proles enjoy the virtual one.
