Test pilot Cass Hough supposedly broke the sound barrier in a P38 during a 43000 foot vertical dive and was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross. There are references to it here and there online but nothing definite. It is well established that P38's and P47's encountered compressibility issues with their control surfaces in dives, so they at least did approach Mach 1 at times.

The thought of breaking the sound barrier in a piston engined aircraft kinda blows my mind.

Should have done Dick Bong's livery.

Mr. Bong was a helluva Dick, medal of honor winner and the US ace of aces.

Bong thought the P-38 was a heck of an aircraft also…

This kit didn’t have the decals for it. Monogram produced a kit of his plane back in the 80s. I built it then but it’s long gone.

Probably would have to go custom decals, surprised it was made in a kit. He loved his Marge. I’ve been fortunate enough to see this one up in Wisconsin. Always was one of my favorite planes, yours looks great.

It's definitely one of my top 5 for WW2. So distinctive a design and great performance.

P-47s wrecked the better German pilots before the P-51 was able to find the right engine.

Bong’s P-38 was perhaps one of the most famous American fighters of the war.

My Dad told me a P-38 likely saved his life in December, 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge.

You wouldn't be here if not for that P-38.
