Vader’s Model Desk: Douglas TBD Devastator Torpedo Bomber

The Douglas TBD Devastator was an American torpedo bomber of the United States Navy. Ordered in 1934, it first flew in 1935 and entered service in 1937. At that point, it was the most advanced aircraft flying for the Navy and possibly for any navy in the world. However, the fast pace of aircraft development quickly caught up with it, and by the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor the TBD was already outdated.
The Devastator performed well in early battles, most notably in the Battle of Coral Sea, but earned notoriety for a catastrophic performance during the Battle of Midway in which 41 Devastators recorded zero torpedo hits with only six surviving to return to their carriers. Vastly outclassed in both speed and maneuverability by the Mitsubishi Zero fighters they faced, most of the force was wiped out with little consequence except to distract the Zeros from the SBD Dauntless dive bombers that sank four carriers and a heavy cruiser. Although much of the Devastator's dismal performance was later attributed to the many well-documented defects in the US Mark 13 torpedo, the aircraft was withdrawn from frontline service after Midway, being replaced by the Grumman TBF Avenger.

Good job! What kit is that?

Thanks. That is the original Monogram kit, first released in the early 70s. One of first kit I built when I was probably about 8 years old was this kit. I found this one on EBay and built it mostly out of nostalgia.

Great job on an old kit. I built that kit as a kid, too. I have several old Monogram kits (F-4J, F-15, F-14) in the stash. Want to use all I've learned and see what they can be turned into compared to when I built them before.

Looks good.
You do only military models?
No car models?

Thanks. I’ve done a couple of cars in the past when people asked me to do one for them. But I stick to military models, usually WWII era.

Well done model of that venerable warbird.
Quoted author has unusual notion of what “little consequence” comprises.
When told of the sacrifices of VT-6, VT-8, and VT-3 at Midway, Winston Churchill wept.

Always been a big fan of modeling but man do they make those pre-painted at all? I once bought of foot knights and mounted knights from Fireforge and had a blast putting them together and deciding how each one looked and what not. But I painted a couple and they came out terrible lol. And the option to have them painted after the fact was super expensive. Would love to put prepainted but I’m not sure if they make it like that.

quote:Unsure. My modeling days are a fast receding spec in my rear view mirror. My experience with aircraft was the models were generally gray or brown and were to be painted to match the box illustration. Decals included were generally accurate to a specific squadron et al. A myriad of paint colors were available and could be mixed and thinned to do a lot creatively.

Do you display all of these together?

Yes. We have a extra bedroom upstairs that’s my “model room”.

Some beginner kits are preprinted. But in general models have to be painted.

So this was more than a "just shake the box" Tamiya/Dragon/Trumpeter build...

just curious what scale is that

Very much so. The fit of many of the parts, especially the wings, was quite poor. Too a good deal of putty on the wing roots to close gaps.

My grandfather was a tail gunner on a Dauntless in the Pacific during midway. Keep the model desk churning out those cool historic planes
