I unfortunately had a great relationship with my HR manager. There is a ton of misunderstanding both ways when it comes to union/company relations.
Talking to guys in the field is completely different than some beat down office worker.

Why? They will be much better engineers after doing a few days or weeks on the unit. It never hurts to get a more intimate understanding of how humbling some of that equipment can be to work on or next to and it just look at on a PMCD
Oh, I agree. I loved when the engineer showed an interest in the unit. Unfortunately the units on strike have a person that knows just enough to get really hurt.
Two days of shadowing someone is woefully lacking.

You should never have a crew comprised of engineers that doesn't have some member of management that didn't come from the unit.
But I agree. Engineers with a genuine interest in the units they are designing for are a breathe of fresh air.

I concur. I read the list going to some units and was concerned. Some units have great teams, a real list of all stars. One or two will be in really serious trouble if they have to ad lib.
It kind of hurts because I like those people and they didn't know what they were signing up for when they graduated last year.

Even though you have taken a jab at me in previous posts, your statements do ring true in this industry. Both sides need to take a step back and look at the over all picture.

Each one of our units have from top to bottom a previous operator turned salaried working at the refinery now during strike, some of which have been at the same unit for over 20 yrs. it only take one takes one make a mistake though. I do not agree with management allowing anyone to work in the units fresh out of school during this time. I have seen first hand engineers not having the full understanding and the complexity of the units.

I wish that were true. In some cases it just isn't possible.

Gotta love this lead headed mentality. Keep that hand strong.

Hate for the plants to prove they can run without em...

No sometimes it is not possible everywhere. We have people who have come out of retirement last year back to help with the strike as well. Now management needs to pay attention to the contractors who will be on site .

This just isn't true for the most part. The people at top hourly wage where I'm at would have to work upwards of 1000 hours of OT to get to my salary. If they do that more power to them but I would rather work less than half the year when you throw in my 4 weeks of vacation.

talk candidly with both sides and neither want this to go worst case.

No I am not saying this at all! I am merely saying the graduates fresh out of school have not even finished all the training before this strike took place. Allow them the opportunity to work along side the employees who have been at the units for decades. Not throw the newbies start to a unit with out a lead.

Definitely agree.
But if i offer to buy your house for half its value and you have the means of telling me to try again. Then i do and offer same. You will eventually decide to stay there or find another buyer
Point being, this is a shite show by the unions pushing an agenda and putting hard working americans who support a reasonable contract out of jobs.

This deserves an upvote.

True, only thing I would add is that you are homeless when making the offer.
I know you need the house, you know I need to sell it.

You say this, but no one has made public what the offers from Shell have been.

Doesn't matter, I can promise you Gary Beavers never presented it to the members for a vote.

Don't jump on two words and ignore the rest. The membership would have taken a lot less than what USW has decided they will settle for absent the members.

Most memebers don't think long term nor have the research available to know what other contracts have been signed recently.
For instance, some of the BASF employees are recieving almost a 20% match on their 401k's right now. There are other terms that contribute to this match, but an average employee would not know this was possible.
(Btw, "shiftworker" may refute this claim when he wakes up, all I can say is my proof is firsthand on that match)
