Moving from a small town in Louisiana to near Denver, CO. Will want to buy a used car but don’t feel comfortable with those local used car dealerships or buying from an individual. Is Carmax or another national chain like AutoNation okay?

I've used CarMax and think they're good. I would just be sure to check the origin of the used car you buy. Would not get one that comes from northern states.

Unless you want something pretty specialized just go to Carmax. Its by far the most pleasant experience.

You're asking if buying from a dealership a reputable option?

You’ll probably end up with a Subaru Outback with a Save the National Forest and a Bernie sticker already on the back.

You're going to pay a premium for that pleasantness, and you'll rule out CPO options if you're looking for that. The internet has made car buying way less stressful if you can put in even a tiny bit of effort.

Whatever you do, get an AWD vehicle. That being said, there will be more selection at used lots in snow areas than Louisiana.

The internet has changed used car buying. You can easily find reviews/ratings of dealers and find what you want without risk.

Shop on carfax.com

That’s where I found a car for my son. It gives you the car fax history and is a great site to navigate and find what you need.

Disagree on the price. While you can find cheaper sometimes, carmax usually has nicer inventory when compared to the used lots in my experience. I think their prices are at the market most of the time, but i have a limited sample set.

Absolutely agree on the CPO. If that matters to you then go to a dealer, but you'll pay an extra premium for that.

I disagree with your disagreement. Their no haggle prices are not competitive with deals you can get elsewhere. You pay for convenience and ease of transaction. No one would buy anywhere else if they had the lowest price and the easiest transaction.

I paid less for a CPO F150 than any similar model CarMax had available nationwide, so...

Used car prices are insane right now, especially for trucks. It was actually cheaper for me to buy a new RAM truck with the current incentives and rebates they have going on. I found used ones optioned exactly the same for several thousand more.

I just bought within the last two months. You didn't shop very hard if that's the best you found.

If you don't mind overpaying by 2-3k you'll likely get a decent car.
