Didn't approve his thesis, wouldn't write a letter of recommendation, and your academic career is over. Academic advisors can make or break you at the graduate level. Doesn't excuse what he did, but that is probably the motive. And yes it has happened before. IIRC a similar incident took place at UAB a while back.

Happened at the University of South Carolina. Someone came into the Public Health building and shot a professor.
