Things must have changed. When I lived in Winston-Salem for two years, everyone there was trying to convince me they were deep south. It pissed them off when I argued snow, ice, comparatively long winters and the word NORTH in the name of their state. It caused near violence to say that NC was part of "the north".
They also thought Wake Forest football was something to brag about.
I didn't care one way or another, but countless jimmies were rustled.

Many residents also refused to pose for pictures since they were scared it would take their souls.
