Most urgent cares don’t take Medicaid so it weeds out a lot of those people that can go to ER free

But I am sure you have a lot of people who go to the ER for bullshite reasons that they would have gone to an urgent care if one was open.
Probably not. People who go to the ER for bullshite reasons are usually people with no insurance and no means/intent to pay the bill. ER's can't turn people away for not having insurance or means to pay their medical bills, but urgent care clinics can turn them away.

Patients with insurance or plans on paying for services don't use ER's for bullshite reasons because they know it will cost them a whole lot more than a visit to urgent care or their PCP.

It also seems like people have started using the urgent care as their PCP.

Colleges adding full service health centers as part of their nannification has created this weird situation where tons of students go from pediatrician to campus doctor, and then graduate and don't see a need to find a PCP, sometimes for years.

With some employers doing yearly wellness exams on-site through their company insurance, there's even less urgency.

With covid hitting, there's suddenly tons of PCP-less young adults needing negative tests for various reasons, plus lots of new covid hypochondriacs increasing overall demand.

Plus universities going to absurd restrictions and having overwhelmed campus health centers is sending a lot students to urgent care who would normally see the campus doctors.

They certainly can turn them away if their problem isn't emergent.

And even when they can't, they're only required to stabilize them enough that they can safely wait for a regular appointment, even if that appointment needs to be made at a free clinic.

Iirc, Earl K had one of the ER hallways with a one-way locking door. Those rooms were available for quick assessment and discharge when the staff suspected they might have trouble getting someone to leave. The unlocked door at the other end of the hall was the fire exit.

So it's basically a virtual queue.

This exactly. Many have online check-in ability, not appointments, so OP was likely in a queue anticipated to spill over to the next day.

Just like if everyone decided they needed a haircut at the same time. Not much Tammy Lynne can do about it, sugar.

But yeah, I thought about how difficult it would be to find people willing to work those hours.

Not sure if it would be that hard. I'm by nature a night owl. I'd love to work the 3-9 shift in any job and I know many docs volunteer for exactly the late afternoon shite. Sleep until 10ish, no rush hour to and fro and get home for a late 9pm dinner, stay up late...some people love those hours.

(Urgent Care locations going to appointment only?) What is this nonsense?

Maybe it's now about first screening "customers" for whether they are "worthy for care" on the basis of their VAX STATUS.

Some but most urgent care employees are young people with school aged kids…doesn’t work. Most quit just because it’s open til 8 and they want to be off by 4 or 5
