had it sent last week. called today and got the 
from the operator... called again tonight and they said it was lost

Do you have a valid tracking number? If not, someone is lying to you. UPS loses packages, but at a 0.00003 clip. That's 3 in 100,000.

funny thing happened to me
UPS lost my flashlight for work!!
I call maglight and they sent a replacement.
a cpl days later, I get the old flashlight and the new one taped together....

If ups lost something, and it ain't insured, you're well fricked. They never find (or compensate for) lost shipments my company ships unless it's insured.

If your budget is so tight that you need a bonus check to go on vacation then you probably should be saving that money instead of going on vacation
