Not really sure what board to ask this but here we….Our Havanese is 13 years old and healthy. This 9 lb dog has an infatuation with drinking water. Like will drink 10 times her body weight in ounces if we let her. Always thirsty. Vet ran every test imaginable and all negative. Tested her for Diabetes Mellitus and Insipidus. We have her on Proin twice a day but it’s not working. We even started limiting her water intake but she will bother the shite out of you until you give her more!! She is paper trained and does well but while sleeping, she will just urinate all over herself or the bed and not even know she’s doing it. She will even do it while sleeping in her own doggie bed. Anyone dealt with this before? Any condition that my vet might be missing?

It is called getting old. I had a 14 year old black lab that would do that she would drop a little poop everytime she stood up. I tried the diapers for dogs but she kept ripping it off. It broke my heart but I had to stop letting her in the house because of it. However, I did build her a climate controlled dog house.

My female medium sized mutt has this problem. She is only 5 years old and this started about a year ago. We tried putting dog diapers on her but they come off too easily. So, we bought about 8 of those washable doggie pee pads. She sleeps on the bed still but she has to sleep on the pad. I keep one on the sofa too and she has to stay on it. We change them out and wash as needed.

It only happens when she is sleeping. Vet said it is more common than a lot of people are aware. In many dogs that have been spade, the procedure damages the muscles that help them hold pee in. While they are sleeping, they relax and piss themselves.

Thanks to everyone who contributed your feedback. We called our vet and asked about giving Incurin a chance. He said it couldn’t hurt so he gave us a prescription. After 2 weeks of her on the Incurin, she hasn’t had one accident!! We are amazed that this could be the solution. Keeping our fingers crossed! Thanks again to the OT. You guys are legendary!!

Glad to hear you found the solution. I was surprised both times that Incurin simply worked almost like a light switch which is rare in medicine and worse for animals since they can't talk. A further benefit is that it is cheap, while I would pay most anything for my dogs it is nice when the solution is effective and inexpensive.

Always wondered if him constantly drinking water was linked to his kidney slowing failing. I miss my dog

Nope…dehydration causes kidney failure, but excessive drinking helps with kidney failure. You probably helped him live longer. Sorry for your pup.
