What branch if you have a record?
I have two misdemeanor marijuana possession arrests from when I was 17 and 20 and a minor in possession of alcohol when I was 20. All of that had been expunged from my record, so as far as the civilian world is concerned, I have no record. I've even had a detective friend run an extensive background check and it's come up with nothing.
The only reason I haven't enlisted years ago (I'm 26 btw) is because I told the recruiters about my background and after that didn't even bother to run their background check because they insisted it would come up and two marijuana charges would be too much to overcome.
The last time I talked to a recruiter Obama was still in office. Does anybody know if they're more lenient under Trump? Or should I keep my mouth shut since it's expunged and just hope nothing comes up? Or any particular branch that would still take me?

That's interesting. I know I have no record. But if you told the recruiter would that stay on file or not. Pretty good question

My recruiter was pretty shady. When I told him I had a few minor things on my record he asked for copies and when I brought them he threw them in the trash and said "I never saw that".
I mean, if they've been expunged I wouldn't think it would matter all that much, or at least waiverable. Now on your security clearance application (if needed) I probably wouldn't leave anything out.

Lol do the branches talk? Like if you applied to the navy told them you smoked weed in the past, applied. Then didn't tell another branch and applied

When did you enlist? Timing has to do with.
Yeah, I've pretty much gave up hope on ever getting a job that requires security clearance. Which sucks because that's like 95% of the jobs that can really translate to the civilian world.
And I have an ASVAB score to qualify for pretty much anything. Literally, I went through MEPS when I was 17 and a HS Senior (ended up backing out before I turned 18) and after all the physicals and the actual ASVAB and everything at the very end I remember everybody was getting called into an office one by one with an old officer who was looking at my file and he literally said "Your ASVAB score is high enough to qualify for basically any job you want. Why the frick are you enlisting as a machine gunner? The other machine gunners I've talked to today are borderline retarded."

I don't think know about recruiters, but all the services process you through the same facility (MEPS) which is where you get your piss test and any waiver you may need so your info will be on file at that facility and available to other branches.

Don't ever leave anything off a Fed Gov background check.
Direct quote from a someone that does them: "There are convicted murder's with secret clearances."
They don't hold anything against you more than 7 years prior to applying.
A DUI or bounced check 6 years ago could give you issues.

Well this is good to know. One of my charges is 9 years old. The other 6.

Yeah. I joined in the late 90's during a manpower shortage. They even threw in choice of duty station (which I squandered on Korea because my a-hole recruiter told me it was the most sought after duty station in the military) and a nice 20k signing bonus.I'm sure it's much more stringent now.

I know it was during the Obama administration, they were cutting back big time. Not sure what it's like now.

Well I know there's nothing on my background. But what if you told one recruiter that you smoked in college, but then told another recruiter with a different branch that you've never done drugs in your life. Would one branch be able to find out what you told the other branch is what I'm asking

I really wish I could enlist. I tried after high school, but unfortunately I would not have been able to join.

No.

Probably would depend on if he wrote it down anywhere. If you just told him in conversation it's doubtful it would get to another recruiter. Did you already try for a waiver?

Do they actually not let you enlist if you have smoked pot in the past? Considering they offer military as a diversion from incarceration, this wouldn't make much sense.

I remember trying for a waiver, and he was supposed to call me, but never heard from him. I also haven't smoked since college never a dependence issue just a social thing.

I think it just depends on how bad they needed bodies at the time. I failed my first piss test but came in 6 months later with a waiver.

This has been illegal for many, many years.

AR 601-210, paragraph 4-8b: Applicant who, as a condition for any civil conviction or adverse disposition or any other reason through a civil or criminal court, is ordered or subjected to a sentence that implies or imposes enlistment into the Armed Forces of the United States is not eligible for enlistment.

That's kinda what I'm thinking. Not a hard drug user, just a typical college kid like 6 years ago.

At the time I came in it wasn't a big deal but someone who has joined in this century can probably give you better info.
