The limit is ~34 but you can get an age waiver if your are older and know the right people/fit a specific role.

I work with a guy right now that was an F18 pilot who graduated with a social studies degree because he sucked so bad at math.

If you are working with engineers, its not going to be bad at all. Besides the OP wants "adventure", he wants to get his hands dirty. If he is with the Navy, it will likely be around water, which generally is better than the middle of a dessert.
