I know GM has had issues with their 8 and 10 speed transmissions

The 6 speeds were shite too. I have a 2016 and 2017 and both torque converters failed before 100,000 miles. Other than that, no issues with either one. I've put another 100,000 on the 2016 since the transmission was rebuilt.

I recently purchased a used 2018 Yukon Denali with the 6.2L and 10 speed transmission. I did a full AFM/DOD delete and tune and it’s a damn rocket ship! Instant torque at low rpm and still gets around 20mpg at highway speeds even always in 8 cylinder mode. I assumed I would have to spend some money on the delete to essentially bulletproof the motor so no surprise even though the truck ran fine when I bought it. Here was my write up:

The 10 speed transmission is solid but the shifts are harsh right now and I have a bit of torque converter shudder when accelerating at low rpm. From all the reading I’ve done, it sounds like I just need new fluid and filter for the transmission so I’ll probably have that done in the coming months.

Before this vehicle, I had a 2010 Yukon Denali that I drove for 10 years. It had 175k miles on the clock when I sold it and was an excellent vehicle. I dropped a lifter at 99k miles and had the AFM/DOD electronically disabled after it was fixed. Never had an issue with the motor after that - it was a beast and very reliable.

I have a 2021 with the 5.3 (no AFM bc of chip shortage during Covid). Been a great truck running about 75,000 miles. Whatever you do, don’t get the 2.7 turbo. Horrible engine if you run your truck hard.

2014-2018 has the dreaded transmission issue that causes the shudder and affects the torque converter

It's the design. Some get lucky, some don't. To start they shipped them out with the wrong Fluid. There is a service bulletin on flushing and replacing. However the root cause of the oil prematurely wearing out is still in the design. The oil gets too hot.. You can rebuild it, put in New, change torque convertor, change fluids it doesn't matter it can still happen again.. Should have been a recall.

Best recommendation is to change the thermostat to a 140 degree to keep the transmission fluid Temps down.. I was seeing Temps up to 180-190 while towing before I upgraded thermostats. Now never goes over 140..

I hear ya .all Japanese vehicles aren’t reliable
My wife has gone through a couple Honda pilots with numerous problems, one being the transmission.

I have a 4 runner,civic along and a 2012 Silverado now .
All run like a top
