Look close do you see the white lettering in front of the leg. That’s the vessel name.
was just going by what a guy at Seatrax told me.

Never seen a liftboat with a crane on the leg, but zooming in it looks like the tower just extends up with the crane ring. I can't imagine the crane actually being connected to the leg unless they have gear motors also.Gear rack to gear rack (leg diameter) dimensions are critical as well as tower ovality.
If you zoom in enough you can see some diagonal braces tieing into the top platform.

That would be almost impossible
Don’t they pull those legs for inspections and repairs? Would the crane being connected be a pain in the arse?

Well, those are their cranes.

I'm pretty sure Seatrax is the only playa in the big boy gam
Pretty sure oil states had the cranes on the Montco boats, maybe not anymore.

I’m aware. However that leg sticking out the water isn’t the stern leg. It’s the port bow leg. No biggie bro.
I’m just hoping they can recover all the bodies alive.

Wasnt trying to take a shot at you..Im just curious as to what could have happened to the crane
Idk man...I'm not familiar with that design to speak reliably on it but the crane can't just free float around the leg and it's obviously not fixed to it either. How would they swing it otherwise? That bitch is mounted somewhere somehow.
And if you've ever saw a crane pedestal up close there's mounting studs every 4 inches, depending on diameter and capacity obviously.

They don't pull the legs for inspections, that would be an outrageous cost. They do have amanway at the top with a ladder but I seriously doubt anyway goes down there.

Do you know which contractor?
Talked to a former client of mine this morning because this tragedy reminded of them. They rent tools and equipment with operators so of course I wanted to check in.
If I heard him correctly, it was Cardinal Coil Tubing.

Look at the pics on first post page 20, the towers extend up for the crane, no crane pedestal with 2000 bolts.

Yes I’m very aware.
So there’s a difference between a ringer crane and a pedestal mounted crane. These were ringer cranes.

They def pull the pads. I thought they pulled legs for some of the smaller LB’s.

Gravity holds the crane down on a turntable. A swing motor mounted below and besides the turntable engages a large gear at the base of the crane to make it swing.
Conventional crawler cranes have a center pin and hook rollers which holds everything to the turntable.
This crane rotated on a turntable that was mounted to a hollow turret that the legs ran through. The turret acted as the center pin. Very strong. And gravity holds the crane down
I presume those bulges you see on the turret are some type “bushing lands”.
Cranes are all about gravity and balance created by counterweights.
It’s all about the counterweights.

The 2nd time I ever went in the gulf I had to swing rope, I thought they were bullshiting me a first. That is dangerous as hell and I don’t miss it one bit.
frick a swing rope. The most danger I’ve ever felt offshore was, by far, was trying to swing rope from a “+10” on a satellite that was really like 5-6 feet above the water, onto a boat where the tires came up to my waist. I remember thinking “why the frick would I even try to do this?” And then remembering there was literally no other way off the platform unless I wanted to swim.
My first time out, I took a crew boat to MP41. Crane operator swung the man basket into the side of a connex box on the way up. Then I had the pleasure of learning how to swing rope to the satellites the same day. While I was a little nervous the first time out on a helicopter, I was mostly just glad I didn’t have to go anywhere on a fricking boat.

So, basically the gear motor tower extended up and was the "crane pedestal"?

Tgrbaitn. Why do you think the pad is not fully retracted into its nest?
The gears/mechanism that move/secure the legs was probably trashed somewhere between the vessel being underway and where it sits now.

We have pulled pads that were damaged but never for inspection. Not saying it isn't done.

I think so. I am probably using the wrong word calling it a turret. Gear motor tower sounds more correct.
The leg goes through the gear motor tower.Correct?
I think you just taught me something.

The only thing that was left on that port bow leg was the walkway platform
