That would cost the US 6.5 trillion dollars a year in UBI alone. That’s double our current entitlement spending.

It's larger than the entire federal budget. The math never works in these scenarios.

We’re getting sidetracked with the idea of this thing being “money”. In my view UBI would be basic food, clothing, and shelter. In other words, tangible things that you cannot waste easily.

That would cost exponentially more

You’re thinking too one dimensionally. You’re correct in saying this thing would not work under current conditions. But, once 80% of jobs have been automated while still providing all goods and services needed, and a tiny segment of the population owns the machines doing the work, UBI becomes a “bribe” to keep the masses from bringing out the future version of the guillotine.

Yes it would. Again, if there are no jobs for the majority of the population, what is the alternative?

I was referring to the idea of providing tangible goods instead of just currency

So you have 80% unemployment, where do you get the money to pay your citizens? Economic output would be way down. Consumer spending is roughly 70% of GDP.

You wouldn't be able to squeeze that out of the employed 20% and businesses with declining revenues.

I guess they could print it and we'd all be using dollars as toilet paper.

This is why I said in an earlier comment that at this point money becomes obsolete. There would be machines doing all the work churning out almost all the goods and services needed so providing those to everyone becomes something that just happens.

Presumably an explosion in AI would lead to an explosion in other innovations, ushering in an economy of abundance. Several sci fi novels have been written on this theme. One of them is titled The Diamond Age, so called because in this future, diamonds are so commonplace they're used as construction materials.

What jobs exist in the delta?

What makes you think people should stay where the jobs are limited?

Just like ghetto dwellers, you will never the leave the ghetto if you don’t leave the ghetto.

I’ve worked with and hired people educated in the delta who drew the very easy to reach conclusion that they simply needed to move. I’m pretty sure they were inspired by Sam Kinison.

Did you seriously just selectively quote my post? The following is the rest of the quote:

I do think the government enabled this culture by paying entitlements to people in dead towns. They should be forced to relocate or cancel their benefits.

Note: I am from the Delta.

Note 2: I don’t live there and haven’t for a long time.

3. It has to be completely cold and brutal: "This is what you get, period." It won't work if we aren't willing to let people starve in the ditch. Sure, there would still be a place for charity, churches, etc. But the government cannot allow people to waste their UI, and then swoop in and give them more.

Won't happen then
