There's another one if you search for it when I went through engine service in 2013 to become an engineer. I gave a few updates since a lot were interested but i haven't have an update in a few years. Been going back and forth from Avondale to Beaumont chasing my seniority as an engineer.

I'll have to check it out. Thanks for sharing your journey. I thought about trying for the RR when I got out of the military but hearing the horror stories swayed me away. Sometimes I do catch myself wondering what if, though.
I did work a few months in Geismar for BNSF if I remember correctly, just building trains for the plant we were at. shite takes a full shift to get all the cars in line in the order they want from the yard.

What does PSR stand for?

Precision scheduled railroad.. Hunter Harrison started it with i think csx and other railroads have tried to adopt the same thing. A lot of cuts in yards and making trains larger.. Just slows things down on our railroad!

Canadian National and Canadian Pacific before he went to Chicken shite Xpress.
Universally hated to the extent I'm surprised a pissed off engineer didn't burn his damn house down.
I thought about it.

EHH learned this method when he was really at The IC before it merged with CN or CP. Then the hedge fund put him in power. I will say, I was for Hunter coming to CSX. I was so dead wrong, he is still reaching from the grave with his boy Ed Harris. CSX was OK in the past, not BNSF or UP good, but they paid most claims and we had time off. I don't know how we have lasted this long with PSR.

With UP, how do they determine seniority with a group of new hires? Is it possible to stay on the extra board for a while at a terminal close to home?

Step dad was a signal maintainer just retired after 30+ years with UP. Great pension if you can make it that long.

My grandfather worked for UP until he retired in his late 50's. His retirement was expedited as the car that he was repairing the brakes on accidentally got shoved and the wheel cut off half of one foot and some toes off his other.
A few years ago he told me that he loved working the railroad with his buddies and he missed it.

My grandpa also retired from the railroad. I remember him telling me that when he first started with the railroad, I think in the early 1920s,he had to report to work in Morgan City, but he lived in Gibson. So he road his horse to Morgan City and at the time there was a horse stable business in Morgan City that would board his horse for the duration of that work week. He stayed in Morgan City and went back to Gibson when he got time off.

Interesting thread. My wife's cousin has worked over 20 years offshore. Him and his family come stay with us every year for like a 4 days weekend (they live in Meridian, MS). Last summer, he had been through a long hiring process at UP and was waiting on a start date, the job was going to be based out of Avondale.
Not sure what happened but he never started, and is still working offshore.
When we see him this summer I'm curious what he will say when I ask him about it. He was super excited because he felt like he would get to see more of the family, maybe not so much while he was on, but at least before and after his work week shifts or whatever they call it.

Usually by the last 4 of the social. There's been some cases where the youngest guy in the class had the most seniority. It's possible but right now unlikely. So many new classes it's hard to give you an actual truthful answer either yes or no. When i hired out i moved to prarieville that way i lived halfway between Avondale and livonia and closer to Addis and Donaldsonville in case i had to cover there too. I'm about to the point of moving to Beaumont now because with the last year and a half I've spent more time there than home. The furthest I've had to cover was 2015 and had to go to Bloomington for about 4 months. When you get forced wee have an agreement where the company only pays 75 days toward a hotel for engineers and conductors now. And they are pretty strict now. They use to be lenient and reset the days to help you out but now they are penny pinching so much they aren't doing that.

I said this in my other thread about the UP 4014... EHH is probably the most hated man in railroading, and his passing away didn't bring about the end of PSR like it should have. PSR is such a gimmick. It's a shame the Western carriers are starting to adopt it too. Chicken shite Express hasn't recovered yet.
Wick Moorman needs to come back to NS yesterday and put an end to the PSR shenanigans that are starting to ruin a once great railroad.
I know the freight baws hate Amtrak but PSR has really screwed with Amtrak's OTP over the freight roads. The Crescent between NOLA and NYP which runs over the former Southern line between NOLA and Alexandria, VA, has something like a 20% on time rate over the past year or so.
Long story short, working for the railroad blows if you're not tenured. I initially wanted to work for the RR but noped the frick out after interviewing for a trainee position with the UP.

How much experience is needed if you want to move up, say to a Yardmaster, Trainmaster, etc? Do you have to be with the company a certain time, other positions you have to hold first?
Thanks for answering these questions I’m throwing at you.

My great-grandfather worked for Union Pacific and was the engineer of "The Juggernaut."

I know of a dude who works the railroad and sometimes takes his wife when he goes out of town. At night he goes to the bars and has other dudes come back to the hotel so he can watch them plow his wife. She would take Ambien to get thru it.

As far as i know it doesn't matter the experience. They are hiring managers/train masters straight out of college but they did just get rid of a lot due to PSR. Honestly, don't let people know if you're wanting to be a manager while working as an agreement employee, you will catch a lot of flack! The yard masters are usually an interview process from within. They pretty much pick and choose those as they see fit. They put out job postings online for current employees so you can see them separate from others.
