re: Uh Oh... Some want New Orleans Public Schools to take back directly running schools

Take SPS reported by charters (and any school, really) with a huge grain of salt. The corruption in reporting is disgustingly rampant. It is all a shell game. Many schools scores go up because they force very student to take dual enrollment and AP courses, tweak this program or that, and voila, improved SPS. Doesn't matter if they pass; The school system still gets the points. EBR does this at every high school, while forcing middle school kids to take HS credit classes (many of which are not worth taking)
Every school - traditional or charter - has been gaming the system as long as there has been a system to game.
So if everyone is cheating... I think you just look at the relative improvements. Which favors the NOLA charters.

One is that when they are poorly run, then it’s an absolute disaster.
And eventually they will lose their charter.
As opposed to district run schools, which when they are poorly run... nothing happens. They just keep being poorly run.

I can only guess that they are either uneducated on that level or progress or else are counting on the rest of the public being uneducated on it. Oh, irony...
Most (not all of course) charters are well run and part of being well run means you take accountability.
A certain segment of our society isn't a fan of accountability.
There's some minor stuff here too, like people upset about school names changing.

Whatever happened to Sandra 18 Wheeler Hester? The Hester Report was required Sunday night viewing when I lived there before Katrina. You never knew what she was going to say or do
Last I heard a few years back she spilled hot coffee on herself at the Cafe Du Monde on Williams in Kenner, went absolutely apeshit screaming and cursing at everyone, cops were called, cops arrested her for her actions, and she sued everybody. I think Cafe Du Monde settled with her, and the suit against Kenner was tossed.
She's also tight with LaToya, which should surprise noone.

The politicians want to go back to when they had more control over both the purse and how the schools are run. Hard to make headlines from the School Board when you have little control over how the charters teach, and what they teach. Teachers and administrators want to go back to when a charter could not fire them as easily and when their family and friend connections could just move them to another school when they were incompetent.
The charters are far better than the old system. Yes, it means your neighborhood school may not be an option for you, but you have many more decent choices than before. But most are too stupid to realize that. All they know is the school within walking distance is unavailable because it failed and the charter was yanked, or they cannot get in; and they have no control over that.

Everyone I know who has children in NOLA schools send their kids to private schools. Charter or not, I could not imagine thinking I've done the right thing sending one of my children to any institution within reach of the Orleans or Jefferson Parish school systems.

Ben Franklin, Willow, Thomas Jefferson, and Haynes are comparable to any private school for education, especially adjusting for price.
If you have the ability to pay for a catholic high school, then yes, it will likely be better than East Jefferson or West Jefferson.

This is insane. Charter schools are one of the very few things NOLA has going for it right now.
Yes, but it is harder to steal if you don’t manage all the money.
