What exactly does a TWIC card allow you to do?

It's essentially to enter any refinery or plant based around water but most of the places I've been to use it as a form of identification because of the background check regardless of where they are located in relation to a port.

IIRC it's required by TSA to work in any plant that has a dock on the river.

This is not entirely true, the plant that I'm working at doesn't require it. It may be due to the relatively benign product that is produced there.

in general, it tells the plant or dock that you dont need an escort on the property.

Is there a clear-cut set of rules or is it a turkey shoot?

Pretend you are a professional. It's the government, there are rules. Go online and do the prelim stuff. If you have a police record, things may not work in your favor. Either way, you have set your path in life and now you must deal with it. Good luck.

There are people including myself in Louisiana who have taken it and haven't had a major background or drug test. I don't care what TSA says, but I'm not lying to you. Majority of people I know have TWICs for work and will tell you the same.

What do you think the government is doing during the weeks it takes for you to get your card?

I misspoke before about the drug test but they are definitely checking your background.

Yes I have, I've gone from a have to a have not. Well now I'm taking steps to be a have again. It is brutal but I put myself here so I can't feel sorry for myself. I'm just happy to be making halfway decent money again.

Working for a contractor, I'm an nccer certified industrial carpenter but I haven't strapped my tools on since 2000 or so. I don't feel like I'm physically ready to do that yet so I'm in a craft less demanding right now. As soon as I feel like I'm up to it I'll switch. It'll be quite a bit more money than I'm making now. I'm still making a fairly decent amount.

You're right, they definitely background check you but take a look around and you can see that it's not too stringent.

Turkey shoot?

I would fire you from my plant if you used this phrase in front of me. Congrats on the janitorial job though, I'm sure all bathrooms at the plant will be in pristine shape knowing Ben Coleman is on staff.

And I would beat your arse on my way out

Not a janitor but carry on dickbreath. No matter though. If they want to pay me eighty thousand to clean bathrooms I'd do it. Clown

A janitor probably earns his wage more than anyone else there.

I got mine about 7 years ago , that's when they had somewhat of a waiting list because of the amount of people applying at the time , you neede to forms of state ID , I remember because they let me use my fishing license as one of them ...

I filled out a few pages of paper work , I remember a lot of mental health questions, they took my pic and I turned in the application and they called me two weeks later to pick it up , when I renewed it they let me do it over the phone .....

What's funny is I needed two forms of ID for something not that long ago ( can't remember what ) and they wouldn't let me use my TWIC card as one of them ...

Btw I didn't have to take a drug test , at least I don't remember ....

Prepare for half a day to pick up your card. You get brought back in groups of about 12 to give all the base rules of the card on how to store it, how not to be dumb and let someone else use it, keep away from other cards that can mess up magnetism, etc

You got screwed man... I don't know of anyone else this has happened to.

The most important thing is to bring the payment. That seemed like all they cared about at my TWIC office.
