I'm a full blown Uber defender after my experience. I wonder if they need another shill in their corporate scheme.

but I'll bet their contract with drivers says the driver is responsible for compliance with all local laws.

this will be why uber drivers will have to get licensed one day

Try that argument when just one of these bozos gets drunk and kills someone in a wreck. Uber will get uber sued for negligence - sample size my arse.

I don't disagree, but the problem you mentioned holds true for every organization that screens employees. It's not unique to Uber, so it's not relevant to the discussion.

Wow I wonder how much the Tuscaloosa cab companies paid the TPD to carry out that operation?

Not a penny I'm sure. Now donations to local politicians campaign funds, that might be a different story.....

Out of curiosity, do they perform similar stings on taxi drivers?

I would imagine if something similar was done with taxi drivers, you would end up having a few that were breaking laws or regulations.

What are you talking about? I live in Tuscaloosa, and the TPD is a well-respected incorruptible organization. Also, we walk on streets of gold and swim in lollipop rivers.

Correct, but they are at least screening. Uber is apparently either not screening or their screening is pretty lax to let this number of bad apples through.

Put it this way, whatever screening they are doing would not survive the scrutiny of the modern day plaintiff's litigator.

My future bro-in-law graduated this past year from Alabama. TPD sound like real dick heads.

Pretty sure my taxi driver few weekends back from 3rd street home was on meth or high while taking me home. Hah

Only issue I have had with Uber in BR was one driver wouldn't change the jazz music he was playing for some reason, found that odd. and I just looked and I have taken 16 Uber rides since July.

Are you citing other incidents or are you citing your OP where one Uber driver got in trouble?

Because my opinion of your statement depends on what you're citing.

And UBER is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>any cab I've ever taken, besides my "personal" cabby I had in NO for a few years, but even then, all the Uber cars were really nice.

It's not just one, read the article. Multiple got citations for operating unregistered cabs.

I like Uber and want it to succeed. But this is pretty disturbing at least locally. Apparently people think they can just call Uber and start taking people for rides for cash.

If sting was run on New Orleans cab drivers, I bet there would be numerous findings of broken credit card machines.

It's almost like the police don't want a reduction in drunk drivers on the road.

Now why would that be?

With all due respect, I give zero fricks about drivers having some sort of license from a government agency that says, "Hey, you can drive your car for money."

I don't find that "disturbing" at all.

The guy getting busted for drugs/drinking is a moron, and any body who rode with him and witnessed that is a moron for riding with him. Of course, that is "troubling," but being a licensed/unlicensed cab driver has nothing to do with it. There is no special filter that keeps the registered cabby from getting hammered and driving you around over an Uber driver doing the same.

The only thing that keeps them from doing so is their self-interest to keep working and make money.

No shite.

One guy who was driving me in San Fran (I know, rich people in California isn't accurate representation but bear with me) was driving a Toyota Avalon he bought for his brother, who got hurt doing Crossfit ( ). We had fun talking about that.

Anywho, further conversation about CA micro climates led us to find out our driver was probably fricking loaded and was pretty much Ubering for fun/get use out of the car since his brother was hurt.

I've never had a cab driver of that personal "caliber" in my life.

One I took few weekends ago from 3rd street was rough. I had one in New Orleans recently tell me cab driving was his side job, he worked for NASA full time as an astrophysics. He was dead serious too.

One thing that continually gets lost in these OT Uber conversations is the fact that Uber X, the service you are referring to, is but a small part of the actual Uber service.

Most large cities have Uber black car and Uber SUV, which are fully licensed professional drivers.

Uber X is the only service that the average joe can sign up and drive.

I went to a wedding in Alexandria, got wasted, and took a cab home. The taxi driver picks me up and his friend is in the front seat. They proceed to drive around for twenty minutes because they needed to "wait around for a phone call so they could make a quick stop". Mind you, I'm in a very nice suit. They take me to the freaking ghetto, leave me in the taxi, and they go inside a house to "pick up some fare" the driver was owed. They bought crack.

I sat in the taxi, in a suit, with a bunch of thugs sitting staring at me from a front porch.

Yeah, uber really hires the scum of the earth.
