You're taking the original posters words out of context, he is saying he is driving 25-30mph because the other drivers around him on the interstate are. Highly doubtful he is driving 25-30mph if other vehicles on the interstate are driving faster than that, but if he is then I agree---it's probably time to get off the road

If it's raining so hard that you have to drive 25 MPH on the interstate, then you need to pull over, regardless of what everyone else is doing.

Well I'm not sure if you drive on the interstate or not but people are not doing that and you really don't have any control over how fast the cars in front of you are going

Maybe the drivers around you are just idiotic, but I see plenty of people move to the shoulder during heavy rains. Being in traffic engineering, I tend to pay attention to that sort of thing.

Yes most drivers are idiotic, but I see very few drivers pull off to the side--if any.

Being someone that has a cumulative hour commute on the interstate for work every day I tend to pay attention to that sort of thing

But you can see where they are. The lights will still be on because when you turn your headlights on, the tail lights follow. There is no difference between visibility. If they have to slam the brakes on then they would still have to slam the brakes whether they had hazards on or not.

You are telling me that you literally cant see someone's running tail lights on if it's raining too hard in front of you? That's what all of you keep referring back to when saying that
quote:

if they have their hazard lights on in a storm like this, I now know where they're at and can keep a safe distance in between vehicles

What is different? How can you not see the tail lights in front of you whether they are flashing or not?

you are stating opinion as fact. If you can't drive safely if others have hazards on in the rain, pull over and wait the rain out.

I've never had any issues and they allow you to see where cars ahead of you are before you would be able to tell if they only had the rear dim lights going.

If you don't feel safe enough driving in the rain without hazards on, pull over and wait the rain out.

Pull over and do what, put your hazard lights on? And get rear ended because everyone thinks it's the norm now to follow hazard lights in the heavy rain? No, thanks.

NO. Sometimes you can't see the vehicle in front of you at all, and sometimes you can BARELY see the vehicle in front of you.

Vehicles are already driving well below the speed limit when hazard lights are necessary. If it is not torrential downpour, it's probably not necessary.

If you can't see (or can barely see) the car in front of you then your reaction time as well as the driver behind you will have to have an even faster reaction time than normal when the driver in front of you slams on the breaks (which is very likely to happen during a bad rainstorm).
And you may be a big bad arse driver who will "definitely slam on the breaks in time if that were to happen" but do you really trust whoever is driving behind you to be as great of a driver as you are? I don't.

Having your hazard lights on significantly helps with visibility. It is also a sign to proceed with caution---the weather is extremely bad so keep a safer than usual distance between you and the car in front of you.
WTF is so hard about this to understand?

On another note, 18-wheeler drivers have more experience driving than any of us on this entire website and every 18-wheeler driver puts their hazard lights on during a rainstorm so you tell me why they do it rather than not

No, but feel free to pull over if you can't drive while I have them on

If I've learned anything in my years of arguing, I've learned that lying creates doubt about your credibility.

It's funny that you think yours is the more reasonable approach. Group A is perfectly fine driving in a rainstorm without flashers. Group B only feels safe driving in a rainstorm if they have their flashers on. And Group B thinks Group A should pull over and wait out the storm.

ETA: I'm just going to turn my brights on. Just want you to know I'm behind you. I'd feel much safer that way.

My comment was originally a response to someone telling me to pull over if I didn't want to drive without hazards in heavy rain to pull over.

I'm just what I feel is safer and since there is no agreement between people or state governments on that issue, all I can do is go with what I feel.

Go ahead and do the same, i'm not demanding that you put on your flashers.

When you are stuck on the interstate during a bad rainstorm for your first time take note of the 18-wheelers, I'd be very surprised if any of them don't have their hazard lights on

The sentiment is mutual

Which is a reasonable request. You don't feel safe driving in the storm without your flashers on. Pull over and wait it out. There are plenty of people that are A OK with it.

Just don't get too close and we are all good. I think following too close is illegal in all states.
