Trying to figure this out

Sometime, around 2012, I happened upon this site, by accident, while doing a google search.
While I had no intention, at the time, of ever signing up as an actual member, Since then, I have occasionally come back to read through the posts I find interesting.
In doing this, I have discovered that a lot of the members here are extremely clever and are , for the most part, quick to debate important issues with a well rounded view and even profound insight, here and there, unlike many of the people I know, who seem to just follow the crowd of majority rules.
Although, without a doubt, I have ran across the occasional posts that I’ve felt were completely ridiculous, I have also been enlightened by opinions on serious issues, such as suicide, health issues, death, grief, and addiction, just to name a few.
Like many members here, My life has been affected by many of these issues, and Although I have never posted, I have found encouragement just by reading through this forum. I have been blown away, at times, and have witnessed true compassion here. Also, through the years of reading through, I have become familiar with and understand some of the lingo used here.
With that being said, last week, After dealing with a problem of my own, for over a year, I decided to muster up the courage and sign up to become an official member so that I could post a question and maybe get some solid advice on an issue that had I had been trying to solve for a long time.
However, almost immediately after posting, I realized that I was being trailed by the OT police. As a new member, I was accused of being a troll, and then what seemed like a serious debate about if I was trashy or poor, just within the first few replies.
Some of these replies were completely brutal, so I decided not to continue reading.
After my anxiety level subsided, and I was able to salvage what little dignity I had left, I went back and discovered that there were some genuine people who had responded, and gave me some really helpful advice.
So, after all that, I am curious to know, had my issues been a serious one, are there still people who are relentless in holding the title of #1 douche bag? Or is there an admin who is appointed to delete any responses that are heartless or immature?
Do you treat people this way in real life? Is this the way all new members here are treated? Just wondering...
Oh, and baws, it’s just a question. You don’t have to act like an arse! I don’t need that shite! Be nice!

Welcome to TD. It gets better, unless you're a LLotOT.

For the love of God, someone take this guy's comma button away.

You knew what you were getting yourself into. If you want to read the genuine responses then you have to be man enough to sift through the troll posts as well. Its a TD unspoken rule.

We're not all bad, for the most part. New people always get reamed.

I read a lot of that. It is heart warming. I wish you the best here. It really is a fascinating place at times. You'll come to know certain posters and when you see their screen name you almost instantly know what they posted. They are not very imaginative, maybe they're mentally dull, or have no sense of humor. But it's a great place. And I welcome you, and if you ever down that way please stop in and see a bunch of them. Especially since I'm in North Carolina.
