I thought this was a thread where you were asking to IRL some hard legs.

It happens after a few days, the door to the garage wouldn’t close with a thick extension cord, and my dog would likely chew the cord up with it laying around for multiple days.

sounds like that outlet isnt wired properly.
the gfi can be wired so only one plug is safety protected, this sounds like the way yours is wired. nothing needs to be changed to fix that, you just need to turn off power and rewire the way they are connected to the terminals.
personally if you going to all that trouble you may as well get a new outlet and it will have the correct wiring connection instruction with it.
