I’ll update this more later when I can, but I just travelled with 2 toddlers to Europe this summer (3 flights there, 3 flights back).
-buy the kids their own seats
-double stroller is key for moving through the airport. You can gate check it at the plane and pick it up by the plane door when you land. It’s also handy for hanging/storing your backpack or other hand luggage while on the move or at the gate. If you don’t have one and want to buy one, this is the one we bought (cheapest I could find with the basket part underneath) : amazon
-lots of (sugar free) lolli pops for take off and landing ear popping
-lots of entertainment and snacks, will update this post with ideas for that
-lots of patience! They don’t really understand what’s going on and why, especially the 1 year old. Remember that!
-it’s a short momentary thing in the grand scheme. The stressful moments shall pass. For us, the kids weren’t even nearly as stressful or annoying as the stuff the airlines did (changing gates and planes when something broke, changing up our seats after we selected them months ago, bags didn’t make it, lost a whole ticket on the way home (!!), all sorts of ridiculous things out of our control.
Take a deep breath and roll with it! It’ll be fine!!
Entertainment: toy cars, water wows, coloring books and a couple of crayons, stickers!!! You can get the puffy stickers that won’t cling too hard to surfaces like the tray table. I think for the 18 month old stickers occupied most of the time. You can get a huge set from Amazon for super cheap. And when all else fails, SCREENS. lol. We don’t use iPads at all so it was like a novelty for the older child. The younger child wouldn’t keep headphones on. For snacks, try to hit the trifecta of low sugar (to avoid sugar crash mood swings), low mess, and take a long time to eat.

Bring a foldable wagon, way more useful than a stroller going through the airport. Just lots of activities and lots of patience

Hope you’re seated near other folks who were in your parental shoes in the past. I’ve had parents sit by me and I tell them I used to fly with my own kids and nothing the kids do will bother me. They seem so relieved. A kid can cry for 2 hours straight and I can just ignore it.
Bring lots of diversions and hope for the best.

Traveling with toddlers on a plane. Any tips?
Bring some candy/gift card for the flight attendants and give it to them when you board
You have to hold the toddlers during takeoff and landing with your seatbelt
Bring some painters tape and let them go crazy, easy to peel off afterwards
Ask FAs for hot cup of water to heat up bottles
Don't stress if they cry, people understand having infants on a plane, dont panic, just do your best to walk them up and down the aisle or give them a teether or paci until you reach cruising altitude to help their ears pop
bring headphones for them to listen to white noise
I got a lot more....

I'm not reading the whole thread, so some of this may have already been mentioned, but this has been our strategy and it works well enough.
- Car seats aren't worth the hassle. They're not going to stay in them and it's a lot of extra crap to carry and situate.
- Collapsible stroller that you can gate check.
- Take all of the space that you were going to use with the car seats and instead load up on their favorite snacks. You can't have too many snacks.
- Bring some Starburst or something similar for the 2 year old and a bottle/sippy cup/pacifier for the 1 year old and give it to them during takeoff so they pop their ears with the pressure change.
- Go to Dollar Tree or whatever and load up on cheap activity garbage and have a bag of tricks that you can pull from during the flight. Obviously don't let them see it before they're on the plane so they don't lose interest.
- Extra clothes that aren't checked if you think they might puke (and maybe an extra shirt for yourself).
- It's always the nuclear option for us, but tablets to watch Bluey or whatever on.
I'm hypersensitive to ruining everyone else's flight experience as well, so I know the anxiety. Godspeed.

Cherry Coke with a little bit of vodka

Pack some favorite toys, IPad, and snacks. Try to keep meals and naps on the regular schedule.

quote:Definitely this. Not just for puke but for spilled food, drink, random diaper explosions, etc. as we all know kids find a way to ruin their clothes almost constantly

James McMurtry said it best,
"Strap them kids in, give 'em a little bit of vodka, In a Cherry Coke".
Edit: GDit HooDoo beat me to it.
