But the OP said he doesn’t want to take on a big house note or do maintenance.

And it’s still $$$ here. 400k won’t get you very much here unless it’s a condo or townhouse. Or a small old home in a decent area that needs a full renovation. Or a decent sized home in a shady neighborhood.

I don't think Superior is depressing. It's remote desert and very peaceful. If you're down for solitude, it works.

Not my cup of tea though.

Tell him to ask George Strait about some of that ocean front property he owns. Might be in his price range

Plus some free perks if you buy.

Your brother should not have accepted the promotion/transfer without understanding the housing market and telling his employer he's not going to downsize his life to move for them without them making a COL adjustment.

Here is a link to a friend in the area. Charlotte will help your brother. Charlotte Chang Homes - you will love your new home long time.

Seriously, she's a friend that can help locate a hidden gem in the area.

It’s super far though. And there is nothing there. I live in East Mesa now and it’s still like at least a 45 minute drive from me. He would be driving at least an hour to an hour and a half each way to Tempe.

The arboretum nearby is really cool though and scenic easy hiking along Queen Creek

My brother is being transferred from Dallas to Phoenix. Married no kids. Currently owns house in Dallas worth about $400k with about $300k in equity.

He's almost 50 yrs old.

He's fine moving to Phoenix but he doesn't want to take on a big house note nor does he feel like maintenance on a big house.

He's open to condos, but everything near his job(East Tempe/Skyharbor Airport ) is either shitty looking or $$$ for an 800 sq ft condo.

I suggested he just live in an RV park as I hear their really nice ones there. He's amenable to this. He just wants to save as much money as possible right now to retire in 10 years.

I know several posters live in the area. Any suggestions?

there are a ton of high-rise condos going up downtown right now. lots of places to eat, drink, and parks. and if doesn't want to drive, the light rail would be an option rather than driving. and that is sweet option - the 202 heading back into the city from the east valley is a cluster all day, every day. just don't get too far west or too far south of downtown. the amount of homeless people downtown and in "the zone" is insane compared just just a few years ago.

another option would be south scottsdale/tempe. look north of the 202, west of the 101 and south of camelback. there is some affordable housing in there.

further afield but probably cheaper, look into ahwatukee or chandler. but that will be a bit further drive.

I'd urge him to consider Gilbert - Chandler - Mesa
Great quality of life there
We miss Gilbert big time
In 2020 we put our home on the market on a Sunday at 3pm. We got asking price and sold it by 5pm.

he would be foolish not to sell his home and make a bundle while he can.

A new mortgage at 50 is pretty much a coffin.
