So here's a few points about this, and Hammond area guys can vouch for this. I do agree with you guys position that on the facts this is an illegal search and seize (I'm a lawyer), but:

1) tangi sheriff very seldom pulls anyone over randomly, and they don't really write speeding tickets.

2) D. Edwards is not really about taking your shite unless you really worked hard to earn that treatment.

3) K Benitez, in the comments to the Facebook story (he owns the news org that reported this and wrote the story) says that there is more to the story.

4) the sheriff is under no obligation to reveal all of his probable cause in the news release. In fact it's a good idea to misdirect everyone depending on the real facts and protecting the source. The real facts will come out in court.

5) tangi sheriff position no matter who is sheriff had always been extremely well connected with DEA and more recently border patrol because of i12 and i55 intersect. Dudes have the scoop and what's up and they act when they have the data and the opportunity.

6) yall do know that just about every week the tangi sheriff pulls people over (like the only person they pulled over all day) and that just happens to be a major drug stop right?

7) finally, there is a reason Barry seal loved Hammond and Hammond airport.

Just sayin. Yall all gettin upset but no reason to. Guys had prob cause and they did what they do.

This isn't some case of a business owner wrongfully having money take from him. Find a better example to complain about. It makes it impossible to take you seriously when you're whining about drug dealers getting $800k in cash taken from them when they were arrested while crossing state lines.

Arrested while crossing state lines..

I hoped they did. Otherwise a lot of outrage was wasted in this thread.

Civil forfeiture is a different topic and I agree there are issues with it.

I think there are two different problems here. One is the facts in the story, which aren't all the facts, and create a borderline illegal search with no probable cause. This has everyone pissed off. But undoubtedly they had more Intel that's not being revealed to media.

The second thing that has everyone pissed under these facts is the seizure of the money. this is understandable. But my guess is the money was tracked from Memphis or Atlanta. From the source. From the drug source itself. So, if that's the case, then what?

Not that big of a deal. Tangi sheriff only pulls you over if you ridin dirty and like there's 100 Feds watching you for weeks.

If you are carrying any significant amount of cash in your vehicle (whether it was legally earned or not) YOU DO NOT TALK TO THE POLICE. Generally the only information you have to give to police during a traffic stop is name, registration, and insurance information.

I can't for the life of me understand why these small government conservatives think its okay for government workers to take shite eating grin photos of themselves in front of a big pile of cash that they stole from somebody based on suspicion.

I honestly don't care if the person was a drug dealer. It doesn't say they found ny drugs. I support FREEDOM.

We are no longer a cash society and it has been well established that dealers transport large amounts of cash. It is reasonable to assume that most law abiding citizens would not be concealing cash (assuming the cash was in a hidden compartment) if the money was legal. While on the surface, having large amounts of money is not illegal. Concealing large sums in a vehicle is a component of money laundering. You add things like this with interviews, money traces, bank reports, and wage reports to build a case. The occupants' criminal history is another factor that comes into play. If the guy has never worked a legit job in his life, hasn't claim a dime of legit income to the IRS, is concealing/transporting a large sum, and/or has attempted to avoid a United States financial reporting form, it would be a pretty strong application for civil forfeiture and potentially a decent money laundering case.

Then prove it in a court of law that something has been done wrong. If hiding cash is illegal my grandmother was an arch criminal.
Civil forfeiture is anti constitutional and abused. The case in point is of a large sum, but the problem is that it has been used against normal people all over. I would rather a few dealers get away with it and rights protected than deal with the abuses that we are seeing now.

So, basically, if you get a ticket a cop can rob you at the same time?

Cops are out in full force in this thread.

It's amazing, right? A bunch of money and all the pigs in here sniffing around and of course defending other pigs for keeping people's money. Civil forfeiture is stealing, plain and simple.

Whenever they "randomly happen to pull someone over" who is carrying large amounts of illicit things, it's never random. You're not gonna have someone driving around with 50 keys in the trunk doing 20mph over the speed limit. They follow all traffic laws.

I have been pulled over plenty of times, and have only once been asked to have the car searched

Good grief, this board loves Barry Seal.

They got some Intel, no charges filed/ dropped, they'll get to keep the money they stole.
Life goes on.

Louisiana leads the league in little shithole sherifff's offices stealing money.

It's all good until one day it's your money.
