I had a related conversation with my parents a few months ago. We were talking about my house budget (as the wife and I are starting to look), and they seemed mildly surprised at how high it was. Not that I couldn't afford it, just that it sounded like a lot of house. I started explaining the realities of the housing market, and to drive the point home, I asked them how much they paid for the first house we lived in when I was a child and the year they bought it. It was a simple, but nice and relatively new 3br/2ba house in a middle class neighborhood. When I plugged it into an inflation calculator, the money they spent then was the equivalent of about $72k today. I then asked them what they thought a house like that would be worth today.

They then undertsood
