I managed to take the dryer apart without ripping my flesh open but unfortunately I was not able to find the source of the smokey smell that comes out of the vent.
I've bypassed the vent hose by noting that the air that comes directly out of the dryer smells smokey but only when it is set to heat. When I turn it to "no heat" it does not smell smokey.
What I did was take the back off and clean all the innards out that I could see. I took out the lint trap assembly and cleaned that out as well. Still emits a smoke smell.
So.. heating element is faulty?

Yes, spent an hour trying to get the belt in place when all I had to do was push the arm in a direction that I hadn't thought to try.

One OTer bleeds like a stuck pig trying to fix a dryer and one can't figure out where the burning smell comes from.
I'll make sure to pour one out when the dryer finally takes both of you out.

I bet you have lint buildup on your heating element. Did you take it out of the heating element housing and inspect it?

After inspecting the heating coil and running some more tests I think I have a working theory as to what is going on.
I've been painting cabinets and I think the paint fumes got sucked into the dryer and are burning off and that's why it smells like lighter fluid when the heating coil is on.
If that's true it should burn off and the smell should go away after a few cycles. I may put it in the car port to test this theory.

I did. No lint or gunk but I think it has oil-based primer fume residue on it. I've been painting cabinets and that's the only thing I can think of.

Your dryer must be very different from mine. I changed mine about 4 months ago. Took all of about an hour and I don't remember even getting my fingers scratched.

We just got rid of an all in one. Put the clothes in; it washes and dries it all in one unit. Biggest piece of garbage appliance ever created. Came with the house. Had to replace something on it almost monthly, it was basically brand new when we ditched it from the shear amount of parts I had to change in the past years. When I finally pulled it out I got it to the front door then dragged it down the street with a chain hooked to my truck.
Got an elextrolux combo to replace it. Great machines so far.
