do you use cellular data when on planes
You won't get service on a plane. I flew from NOLA to Dallas and didn't get it 30 seconds after takeoff. If the plane has wifi you won't need to use data.

A plane is my ready made excuse not to answer a phone. Why would I give that up?
It's Kindle time.

this is always what has bugged me abuot the 911 flight that went down in Pennsylvania.
how were so many of those motherfrickers able to call from their phones while in the air?

Could it be for safety reasons, for instance terrorist plotting?

WiFi may have been on? There are many ways to call via wifi.

I do not get service after we get up in the air to high.

I don't think it "messes with" the plane's communications. I think it's more so you can't "get" the signal the plane's sending/receiving. There's probably data the plane is transmitting that can give someone (terrorist) information about that system. Which they then can exploit for whatever reason. Like hacking into the planes autopilot, knowing which planes have a lot of fuel, getting performance specs on the plane, etc. The signal they send, like cell phones, can be grabbed.

They weren't at cruising altitude. Not a very big mystery to solve

Weren't they using those air phones that some planes used to have?
If so, do they operate on a different system?

Tom Burnett
Deena Burnett clutched the phone at her home in San Ramon, east of San Francisco. She was at once terrified, yet strangely calmed by her husband's steady voice over his cell phone. 6
Deena's 2006 book "Fighting Back: Living Beyond Ourselves" recounts her understanding that her husband was calling from his cell phone.
I didn't understand how he could be calling me on his cell phone from the air. 7
According to an interview of Deena Burnett by the FBI, she could see the caller ID of her husband's cell phone.
Burnett was able to determine that her husband was using his own cellular telephone because the caller identification showed his number, [XXXXXXXXXX]. Only one of the calls did not show on the caller identification as she was on the line with another call.

I guess. There were a few that had to get routed through an operator, from what I remember so they were using the air phones.

usually lose service at about 10k ft unless you have a satellite phone
you may pick it up over a city for a very short time
