Yea, I started my response before you posted that you were a runner. I edited to fit more of what your goals are.

I'm starting with theirs (two of them do this for a living, one of them is a doctor) and I'll adjust through trial and error...the only advice I'm taking from them is the shakes and how many meals to eat in the day and what I want from those meals.

well what are your fitness goals?
your diet and work out program need to go hand in hand.

Man, I dont see how you can go to 10am and workout in between and not eat any real food. Only protein bars and shakes?

a lot of good advice in this thread that I will either immediately take or consider as I move along and see what kind of results I'm getting
to the OT workout crew. I hope to be buff enough to join the clique

2 bottled waters
1 apple
1 banana
1 Boost energy drink
I only lift like twice a week though. But I run every day unless its just pouring rain because the streets flood over a little too much.
bout to run 4 miles here shortly.

as far as weight...no goals. If accomplishing what I want adds, subtracts or makes it an even push, so be it
I just want to add muscle to my upper body, a lot of it, I want muscles that match my frame. In the process, and I'm in no hurry to do so, I'd like to trim just a bit of belly fat, especially around the lower back

Shakes are many of times not that good for you (unless you are doing this all natural and not buying from a smoothie shop) and meal frequency is completely irrelevant. Many times, doctors are the last people you want to talk to about fitness and diet. They havent studied any of it since college, then studied it at a minimum, and are incredibly biased towards pharmaceuticals. Alot of "trainers" have no clue what they are talking about either and are regurgitations of bodybuilding.com forums. Not saying this is the case with the guys you know, but just going out on a limb if they are indeed recommending meal replacement shakes and meal frequency then they prlly dont have all their t's crossed.

intek protein and carboline...I'm not buying from a smoothie shop, I went to Total Nutrition.
I'll see where I am next week. I'll keep my eye on the scale and the mirror and judge how I feel.

I have to force myself to eat anything. I hate breakfast and if I could, I wouldn't eat anything.
I really don't feel hungry in the mornings.
That stretch from 15:00 until dinner is much worse.

Damn dude, 4 miles in 30 mins is pretty solid. 7:30 pace.

they're not, and they couldn't stress this enough, meal replacement shakes...at all.

Then dont eat. I dont eat until 9:30 and fast for approx 14-15 hrs.

Yup, that's it. That is the number one indicator of results. The mirror, how clothes fit, and how you feel overall. The scale is very misleading and most times a detriment.

Chicken, Steak, Beef, veggies and rice
Workout wise. For size and strength low reps at high weight.
If you dont want to spend endless time doing cardio. For trimming fat some kind of circuit training after your heavy lifting. HIIT, Crossfit etc

yeah, it's where I top out at over 30 minutes
that used to be my every day run in my 20s. my fastest 1 1/2 mile run is 8:15, I've never tried to see how fast I can do just one mile. It just seems pointless if my heart rate isn't jacked for at least 20 minutes
