I am not a plumber but it seems to me the simple system on older toilets was just as efficient as some of the newer more complicated ones and easier to fix.

Why the change?

When people started working from home "ball cock" became NSFW.

The newest ones try to get more pressure going with less water so your turds make it down the pipe while we can also save the planet.

That old style mechanism worked great when the toilet used 3.5 gallons of water per flush.

With 1.6 gpf the pressure-assisted technologies are trying to be more efficient at cleaning the bowl with less water.

They had to change it up. Too many sexual terms in there. The inventor must have been some sicko

How is this any different from the way toilets work now?

I just replaced the internals of a toilet that was installed about 5 years ago and the only difference is that the float is integral to the fill valve.

ETA: And it has a flapper instead of a ball. But toilets have used flappers for a loooong time.

When the lift rod chain becomes disengaged from the trip lever and you reach in to tank to fish it out and rehook it do you wash your hands after?

2 of 3 toilets in our house are from the 80s. I've held off on replacing them because they work so well.
