pair of toddlers — ages 3 and 1 — were found alone near a highway in Arkansas roughly two days after surviving a single-car crash killing their mother.

The Ouachita County Sheriff's Department said it has identified a 3-year-old child they found wandering near a highway in Camden, which is about 100 miles southwest of Little Rock, reports CBS affiliate KTHV.

After returning to the scene where the toddler was found, police discovered a car laying on its side in a ravine not visible from the highway, said KTHV. Inside the car, they found the 1-year-old fastened in a car seat.

The driver of the car, the toddlers' mother, was reportedly ejected from the vehicle and died.

The one-year-old was taken to Arkansas Children's Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening conditions including possible dehydration, reports ABC affiliate KATV in Little Rock.

According to NBC's KARK, the children's grandparents are in the process of taking custody of the toddlers.

Detective Nathan Greeley of the Ouachita County Sheriff's Office told KATV said finding both toddlers alive after roughly two days was especially notable because they survived summer heat and humidity. "Today is anything but short of a miracle," he said.

Holy shite, those kids. I can't imagine how terrified they were. Thinking of them alone out there at night is heartbreaking

How do they survive in a car in the heat for a couple days though? I'd think an hour and it kills you.

Mom was ejected to there was airflow. It was in a ravine which might mean shade and cooler temps.

Was that area of Arkansas scorching the past several days?

The mother was ejected and the 3 year old walk away from the scene. I'm sure the car wasnt sealed as the windows were probabky broken .

Holy shite that is sad. Poor kids. I know how my 2 year old gets when it's thundering outside. I can't imagine how terrified those two were in that situation, especially that 3 year old.

Update:

CAMDEN, Ark. - Ouachita County investigators now believe the crash happened Friday which means the two children were trapped in the wrecked car for four days instead of two before three-year-old Kylen managed to get out of his car seat and get help.

Police actually think they survived for 4 days instead of 2 now

Incredible

Because if they hadn't left the car and been found, the 1 year old wouldn't have survived.

That one year old stuck in a car seat for a day and a half or more is terrifying.

This is an incredible story.

Also, here's another couple of questions I have

The mother was ejected, the 1 year old was strapped into a car seat and the 3 year old was somehow wandering around.

Is the 1 year old the only one who had a safety device And if not, how did the 3 year old manage to get out of his seat?

Holy shite man.

My 4 year old cannot get out of her car seat. She's not strong enough to push the button on the waist harness. I can't fathom kids that age making it tmout alive after 4 days.

Squirm and wiggle.

3 year olds are easily smart enough to wiggle out. My youngest is not even 2, and she can get out if you don’t tighten the straps well enough.

You don't think a 3-year old could get out of a carseat? I mean hell, he had 4 days to figure it out.

You really think a 3 year old had the cognitive skills to think " Hmm I need to get out of this safety seat and find help for me and my sibling?"

Then had the physical ability to do so?
